Theater Popcorn is a Scam (And Other Movie Snack Truths)
If I can’t eat it without looking, I’m not watching the movie, I’m having dinner. My definitive ranking of what movie snacks actually works.

I can’t watch movies without snacking. Movies, TV shows, YouTube videos in the background. This isn’t a preference. It’s a condition.
I’ve rewatched Friends eight times. I can tell you exactly what I was eating during each rewatch. The snacks aren’t optional. They’re part of the experience.
After years of research (sitting on my couch eating), I’ve developed strong opinions about what works and what doesn’t.
Here’s my rule: If I can’t eat it without looking, I’m not watching the movie. I’m having dinner. Let’s rank.
S-TIER: Actually Good
Peanut M&Ms — The only candy that belongs at a movie. The peanut makes it savory enough that you’re not just eating sugar. No melted chocolate fingers. Quiet crunch. Lasts forever if you pace yourself (I don’t).
Homemade Popcorn — Notice I said homemade. Stovetop with real butter and too much salt. Light enough to eat massive quantities. Loud enough to be satisfying but not so loud you miss dialogue. The ritual of making it is part of the experience.
A-TIER: Good but Flawed
Pretzels — Crunchy. Salty. Clean fingers. The problem? Boring. The missionary position of movie snacks. Reliable, safe, forgettable.
Chips — The crunch is TOO good. You miss entire plot points mid-crunch. Also, gone in fifteen minutes. Now you’re sitting there for the remaining hour with nothing.
F-TIER: Actual Crimes
Theater Popcorn — Here’s the controversial take: theater popcorn is garbage and you’re being scammed. $8 for popcorn sitting under a heat lamp since 3pm. “Butter” dispensed from a pump that’s probably industrial lubricant. Make it at home. It’ll taste better. I will die on this hill.
Nachos — Everyone loves theater nachos. Everyone is wrong. The cheese demands attention. You can’t grab blindly or you’ll get a cheese-less chip. You’re solving a puzzle, not watching a movie. Also, the cheese is cold within ten minutes and you’re eating sad chips covered in congealed regret.
Anything Requiring Cutlery — Ice cream, yogurt, cereal (are you insane?). If I need a spoon, I’m not snacking. I’m eating a meal. There’s a difference.
What Movie Snacks Actually Do
I tried watching a movie alone after a breakup without eating. Made it twelve minutes.
The silence was too loud. I needed something to do with my hands.
Movie snacks aren’t about hunger. They’re about having a task that doesn’t require thinking. The crunch gives you permission to stay still. The repetition is soothing.
It’s the closest I get to meditation.
The snack is company when you’re alone. It’s a shared ritual when you’re with someone. It makes sitting in the dark feel like an event instead of just existing.
I don’t eat popcorn because I’m hungry. I eat it because it makes the movie feel real.
