Standing on the Edge of Nothing: A Reflection on Consciousness, Reality, and the Infinite

Being in the presence of Deepak Chopra is less like attending a keynote and more like sitting through a gentle sermon of the cosmos. No slides. No charts. Just Deepak— deliberate, emotional, referenced, cheeky. His words don’t instruct; they vibrate.

He began with two of the most-Googled questions in science:

What is the world made of? What is the biological origin of consciousness?

In response, he unraveled a universe we can barely see — literally. Only 0.01% of the known universe is made of atoms. The rest? 70% is dark energy, expanding outward like the inverse of gravity. An infinite field. An unknown everything.

Then came the twist: the world, he says, is made of nothing. Or rather, of mathematical imagination — a poetic menu, not the meal itself. Reality, he offered, is unknowable because it is the conceived within the inconceivable.

To see the world, to be human, is to process it through the SIFT of consciousness:

Sensation, Imagination, Feeling, Thought.

These don’t live in the brain. Cut it open and you find no images, no memories, no love songs. Just electrochemistry. It is consciousness, this infinite canvas that turns vibration into perception.

His formula?

0 = ∞ = 1 (Naught = Infinite = one.)

The silence before all signals. The everything before it becomes something.

As I listened, I thought about experience design — not just UX, but life itself. How awareness of consciousness changes how we build, what we build, and the systems we build within. Products have boundaries. Systems have borders. But consciousness does not. Our job, perhaps, is to design from that space of emergence — the space where nothing becomes something.

It reminded me of another reflection, Rick Rubin speaking with Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz on *The Way of Code. Rubin described AI not as a tool but as part of a new collective consciousness*. A remix culture. Punk rock for software. Art as vibe. Code as spirit.

Nearly a decade ago, my collaborator Kar and I wrote a little manifesto on *Conscious Design. It was born from a similar place: not knowing, but caring. A need to move beyond surface level perceptions of value and UX checklists, into the deeper layers of consequence. We argued that to be designers today is to be accountable for what lies beneath the waterline — the long shadows cast by the things we create. That design must evolve from user-centered to conscious*.

We wrote principles like: look beyond the surface, experiment with the process, feel uncomfortable, forget best-in-class. Chopra’s talk reminded me that this is not just a design philosophy — it’s a worldview. One that honours the unseen, the infinite, the systems inside systems.

And perhaps most importantly, it reminded me to design from the silence — not from fear, or pace, or legacy.

Across both conversations — Chopra’s ancient wisdom and Rubin’s techno-Tao — I heard the same thing:

Stay close to the source.

Whether silence or code, cosmos or creativity, the truth lives in the invisible. And from there, everything emerges.
