The genus Equisetum, commonly known as horsetails, is a group of spore-producing plants that has existed for over three hundred million years. During the Carboniferous period, ancestral versions of these plants grew as large as trees. Today, modern horsetails remain relatively small, yet they retain a unique evolutionary feature. They have a rigid, gritty stem structure reinforced with actual glass minerals.

Most terrestrial plants rely on cellulose and lignin within their cell walls to stand upright. While horsetails use these organic compounds, they supplement their structural integrity through biomineralization. They actively absorb monosilicic acid from the soil through their root systems.

As water transpires out of the plant, this acid becomes highly concentrated and polymerizes into amorphous silica dioxide, the primary component of quartz and glass. The plant deposits this silica directly into the outer cell walls of its stems and branches, creating an integrated mineral skeleton.

This mineral layer serves multiple functional purposes. Mechanically, the silica reinforcement allows the thin, hollow stems to stand upright and resist bending forces caused by wind or water currents along riverbanks.

In addition to support, the silica skeleton acts as an effective defense against herbivores. The mineral granules make the plant tissues highly abrasive. When insects or grazing mammals attempt to chew the stems, the silica grinds down their mandibles and teeth, rendering the plant unpalatable. This tough texture earned the plant the historical nickname scouring rush, as early humans used the abrasive stems to clean metal cookware.
