The Body That Already Knows
There’s a conversation happening right now in corners of the internet where science and spirituality rub up against each other, and it goes something like this: your DNA is an antenna, you are a quantum light being, the Merkabah is activating. Most of it is dressed in the language of physics — frequencies, fields, dimensions — and most of it is a metaphor that has forgotten it’s a metaphor.
I want to try something different. I want to look at three ideas that usually get lumped together — Body Area Networks, the light body, and Merkabah mysticism — and see what’s actually there when you pull them apart. Because I think buried inside the noise is something real. Something that doesn’t need embellishment to be profound.
The Body as Coordination System
Let’s start with the literal layer, because it’s more interesting than people give it credit for.
A Body Area Network, or BAN, is a real term in science and engineering. It describes systems of communication happening on or near the body — the nervous system, bioelectric signals, heart-brain feedback loops. Your body already operates as an integrated signaling network. The heart generates a measurable electromagnetic field. Fascia transmits mechanical tension. Breath alters nervous system regulation. Posture shifts cognitive processing and emotional state.
None of this requires mystical framing. It’s just the body doing what it does — coordinating information across systems in real time.
What strikes me about this is how little most of us are actually in relationship with it. We tend to locate consciousness somewhere behind the eyes and treat the rest of the body as the vehicle of transportation. But the body is constantly processing: threat, timing, orientation, attunement, regulation. It is, in a very real sense, already doing the work that spiritual traditions spent centuries trying to cultivate.
The problem isn’t that people are wrong to sense something extraordinary in the body’s capacity. But the leap from the body is a coordination system and your DNA picks up 5D transmissions, is when it becomes an issue. It skips the actual work of learning to inhabit the body you have, in favor of a more exciting story about a body you might be ascending into.
Light Body: What the Metaphor Was Pointing At
The “light body” appears in some form across nearly every contemplative tradition — the subtle body systems in yoga, the rainbow body in Tibetan Buddhism, resurrection imagery in Christianity, energetic anatomy in Chinese medicine. People often cite this convergence as evidence that something real is being described.
I think they’re right, but not in the way they usually mean.
These traditions weren’t, for the most part, claiming that you would literally become composed of photons. They were describing a quality of transformation — increased coherence, less internal fragmentation, a kind of alignment between perception and action that makes a person feel different to themselves and to others. They lacked the vocabulary of neuroscience, so they spoke symbolically. Light because something becomes less opaque, less contradictory, less dense with unprocessed conflict.
The danger is always literalism. Once a metaphor is taken as a literal description, it stops being useful as a pointer toward experience and starts becoming a belief system you either have or you don’t. And the actual practice — the difficult, ordinary, often unglamorous work of becoming less fragmented — gets replaced by language.
A more honest framing might be: the light body is what coherence looks like from the inside. It’s what happens when the body stops saying no while the mouth says yes. When perception and action no longer contradict each other. When you can remain present inside something difficult without collapsing or performing.
That version is harder. It doesn’t come with activation codes.
Merkabah: A Stable Center Inside Motion

The word Merkabah comes from Hebrew and means chariot. It originates in early Jewish mysticism, particularly in visionary traditions associated with Ezekiel’s chariot vision — wheels within wheels, living creatures, a divine throne in motion. Later esoteric traditions translated this into sacred geometry: interlocking tetrahedra, rotating energy fields, and human energetic structure.
Modern interpretations often teach that activating the Merkabah creates protection, psychic abilities, and ascension. It is worth noting that the evidence for the literal version of these claims is thin.
But the geometry itself holds something worth sitting with. The symbol represents the balance of opposites: motion and stillness held simultaneously. Above and below. The dynamic and the centered. What the image is actually pointing toward — whether or not its practitioners knew it in these terms — is a kind of psychological truth: you can be in motion and remain oriented. You can be affected and not swept away.
That is not a small thing. That is, arguably, one of the central challenges of being a conscious creature.
What Coherence Actually Requires
So, if we strip away the literalism and listen for what these three ideas are collectively pointing toward, we end up somewhere like this: the work is about becoming more coherent. More integrated. Less contradictory.
And that work has some identifiable features.
It requires developing interoception — the ability to accurately feel what’s happening inside the body before you interpret it or override it. Most people are operating on the body’s signals at several removes, filtered through habit, story, and learned suppression. Getting closer to the raw signal takes practice.
It requires reducing internal contradiction. The nervous system is under chronic strain when what the body signals, what the mouth says, and what the mind rationalizes are all pointing in different directions.

Coherence grows not through spiritual bypassing but through slow alignment — action that actually corresponds to what you perceive.
And it requires testing presence under pressure. Anyone can feel open and spiritually attuned in a quiet room with good lighting. The real question is whether awareness stays online during conflict, fear, attraction, uncertainty, and exposure. The mystical traditions knew this. The tests were never about whether you could relax. They were about whether the center held when everything moved.
Why This Matters
I keep returning to something that feels important about the current cultural moment: there’s a genuine hunger to understand the body as more than a machine, consciousness as more than a byproduct of neurons firing. That hunger is legitimate. The body is doing something remarkable. Consciousness is strange and real and worth taking seriously.

But the response to that hunger in many online spiritual spaces is to hand people a vocabulary rather than a practice. To tell them they are already light beings, already activated, already ascending — which feels good and costs nothing and changes very little.
The version I find compelling doesn’t require abandoning the symbolic language. The Merkabah is still a beautiful structure. The light body is still a useful image. The idea of the body as a field of communication is still worth holding.
But those images work best as orientation tools — pointing toward an experience you’re learning to inhabit — rather than as conclusions you’ve already arrived at.
The body already knows how to coordinate. The question is whether you’re listening.
Ever since I was young, something bigger than myself has pulled on me to understand what I could so clearly feel. I am a philosopher at heart, with a background in psychology and dance — and my work is an attempt to articulate that pull into meaning.
