Ineos Walks Away: Britain’s Tax Problem Is Real… 🤯

Jim Ratcliffe isn’t exactly a national treasure. He’s one of Britain’s richest men, but he’s also one of its most divisive. So when his company, Ineos, announced it would abandon investment in the North Sea, many were quick to shrug.

But they shouldn’t.

The reason? Taxes.

Ratcliffe made it clear: Britain’s unstable fiscal regime and excessive levies made the decision inevitable.

And like him or not, he has a point.

For years, governments have treated business and capital as though they’ll stay no matter what. But there’s a breaking point. Keep raising taxes, keep layering on uncertainty, and eventually companies will pack up and go.

For the record: I believe we’re already there.

The tragedy is, Britain was once the destination for global capital. Now? We risk being the country investors avoid. The irony is obvious, when government raises taxes to fund services, they can end up driving away the very revenue they need.

Rachel Reeves has delayed her Budget. My hope is that it’s because she’s searching for cost savings, not dreaming up new taxes. But if history is any guide, optimism is thin on the ground.

So the question is: will Ineos be a one-off, or is this the start of a trend? If Britain keeps punishing enterprise, the answer is obvious.
