Why Did Consumers Start Prioritizing Gentleness Over Cleansing Power?

Imagine someone shopping for a cleanser today.

What question are they most likely to ask?

Probably not:

“Does it clean well?”

More often, the questions sound like this:

“Is it gentle?”

“Is it low pH?”

“Is it suitable for sensitive skin?”

This is an interesting shift.

Because cleansers are still cleansing products.

Yet discussions increasingly focus on irritation rather than performance.

How did this happen?

Part of the answer may be simple.

Consumers remember bad experiences.

A cleanser that causes redness, dryness, or discomfort leaves a lasting impression.

Meanwhile, effective cleansing is often taken for granted.

When a cleanser works well, people quickly move on.

When it causes problems, they remember.

Over time, this changed consumer priorities.

The industry adapted.

Marketing language evolved.

Gentleness became a major selling point.

Terms such as low pH, barrier support, and sensitive-skin friendly became increasingly common.

What’s interesting is that consumers never stopped caring about cleansing performance.

They still want sunscreen removed.

They still want excess oil controlled.

They still want skin to feel clean.

The challenge is that they want all of those benefits without discomfort.

In other words, consumers aren’t choosing gentleness instead of performance.

They’re asking for both.

Perhaps that explains where the cleansing market is heading now.

Not toward stronger cleansing.

Not toward weaker cleansing.

But toward better balance.

In the next article, I’ll conclude this series by exploring a simple question that may not have a simple answer:

What is the single most important thing a cleanser should do?
