Your Bag Is Gone. American Airlines Has It. Here’s How to Get It Back.

Okay. Breathe.

The carousel stopped. Everyone left. Your bag? Nowhere. Vanished. Poof. Gone into the airline void like your will to ever check luggage again.

Here’s what you do RIGHT NOW before you do anything else.

Do NOT leave the airport

I’m serious. Do not go to your hotel. Do not call your mom. Walk directly to the American Airlines baggage service desk (it’s near baggage claim, follow the signs) and file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR).

This gives you a 13-character file reference number. Guard it with your life. It is the only thing standing between you and a month of phone calls.

Now track it

Go to aa.com → Travel Info → Baggage → Track Your Bag. Enter your reference number + last name. Done. You can also do this on the AA app — it’s under your trip details and yes, turn on push notifications.

If your bag hopped on a codeshare flight with another airline, use worldtracer.aero instead. Same deal.

The timeline (so you know when to panic)

• 0–24 hrs: Chill. Most bags come back here. Keep receipts for anything you buy (toiletries, clothes) — AA will reimburse you.
• 24–48 hrs: Call 800–535–5225 with your PIR number. Ask specifically where your bag was last scanned.
• 5 days: File a formal claim at aa.com. You have 45 days to do this. Max payout is $3,800 domestic / ~$1,700 international.

The AirTag thing

Put an AirTag in your checked bag. Seriously. When you walk up to the baggage desk already knowing your bag is sitting in a handling facility at ORD, the conversation goes VERY differently. Ground staff can go get it immediately instead of opening a 3-day trace.

It costs $29. It will save your sanity at least once.

The one habit that prevents all of this

Photo of your bag + tag at the check-in counter. 10 seconds. Do it every single time.

Also: remove all old bag tags before checking in. Multiple tags = scanner confusion = your bag goes to Tulsa.

That’s it. File the report, track the number, escalate at 48 hours, buy an AirTag.

Your bag is probably fine. Go get it.
