I Didn’t Make Thousands in 30 Days Selling Digital Products — Here’s What Really Happened

But first, let me introduce myself.

At heart, I’m a writer. More than that, I’ve always had this deep desire to build a publishing business that creates things people genuinely need while also generating an income. I’ve been writing professionally for over fifteen years, published more books and resources than I can count, and yes, I make sales.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?

This is usually the part where I’m supposed to tell you that I discovered some magical formula that lets anyone make thousands of dollars in a few days by publishing simple problem-solving PDFs.

I’m not going to do that.

Because it wouldn’t be true.

The truth is, I’ve created products that sold surprisingly well, and I’ve created products that absolutely nobody bought. Same effort. Same excitement. Completely different results.

I’ve spent hours designing covers, formatting pages, researching keywords, and hitting that publish button, only to watch a product sit there collecting digital dust.

And honestly, that experience taught me more than the sales ever did.

So, instead of giving you another “get rich selling digital products” story, I’m going to share the truths I wish someone had told me before I started.

  • You’ll make a lot of mistakes. Some of them will be pretty dumb, and you’ll probably make a few of them twice.
  • You’ll spend money on software, courses, and shiny new tools that promise to change everything. Most of them won’t.
  • You’ll quickly realize that some people make more money teaching others how to get rich than they ever made actually writing or publishing.
  • You’ll jump into advertising thinking you’ve finally figured it out, and then the next day you’ll wonder where all your money went.
  • You’ll dream about hundreds of reviews and thousands of dollars in sales, but somewhere along the way you’ll find yourself genuinely excited because one stranger bought your book or left a kind review.

And here’s the funny part — that one sale will make you want to keep going. If any of this makes you want to quit, don’t. Because this is only one side of the story.

Tomorrow, I’m going to tell you why, despite all the frustration, writing and publishing may still be one of the best ways to build something that can pay you over and over again.

If you’re thinking about giving digital publishing a shot, or you’re stuck trying to figure out what to create next, I put together a simple guide based on what I’ve learned along the way. Proven steps and active niche topics you can use to get started instead of staring at a blank page.
