The Dark Mode Delusion.

I’m just giving you the science ;). For 50% of the population, Dark Mode isn’t a productivity hack; it’s physical eye strain.

Dark mode is often treated as a productivity hack and an aesthetic choice. But hear me out: For 50% of the population, it is just higher eye strain. Here is the optical science behind it.

The “Hacker” Aesthetic

Walk into any engineering office, and you see a sea of black screens. Dark mode has become a status symbol in tech. It gives you that infamous “hacker-like” feeling that instantly makes you “cooler” when compared to others. It saves battery (on OLEDs) and feels easier on the eyes in a pitch-black room. A win-win, right?

My “Four-Eyed” Discovery

Interestingly, I noticed something different. After staring at a screen for over 3 hours reading online in Dark Mode, my vision felt blurry. Not to mention, I’m already “four-eyed” (glasses, of course). I switched to Light Mode, and suddenly the text felt sharper and clearer.

I initially thought something was wrong with my screen settings, so I tried correcting those first. But it turns out there was something else. So I dug deeper. I realized I was now diving into Optical Physics. It turns out Dark Mode is not always “Eye Care.” In fact, for reading text, it is often “Eye Strain.” As paradoxical as that sounds.

The Science: The “Halation” Effect

Why does white text on a black background look fuzzy to so many people? It is due to a phenomenon called Halation.

When a bright light (white text) hits a dark background, the light spreads or “bleeds” past its boundaries. The characters lose their crisp edges. For the 50% of the population with Astigmatism (an irregular curvature of the cornea), this is a nightmare.

The white text creates a “ghosting” effect, forcing the brain to work harder to decipher the letters.

In contrast, Black text on a White background doesn’t bleed. The darkness absorbs the light. The edges remain sharp. Some researchers say that while dark mode is less intense on your eye, the fatigue experienced is almost the same in both modes.

Let’s delve into some biology: The “Camera Aperture” Rule

Our eyes work exactly like a camera lens.

  • In Bright Light (Light Mode): Your pupil constricts (becomes smaller). This creates a small aperture. Just like a camera, a small aperture increases the Depth of Field, making everything sharper and easier to focus on.
  • In Darkness (Dark Mode): Your pupil dilates (opens wide) to let in more light. This creates a large aperture. A large aperture reduces the Depth of Field, making text harder to focus on and causing more spherical aberration.

By forcing your pupils to dilate while trying to read fine text, you are essentially asking your eyes to focus with the “lens wide open.” This leads to muscle fatigue.

The Paradox of “Contrast”

We think “High Contrast” is always good. But Pure Black (#000000) is actually too harsh against white text. This is why good design systems (like Material Design) never use pure black. They use Dark Gray (#121212). Pure black causes “smearing” when you scroll on OLED screens (black smear), creating motion blur that disorients the vestibular system.

Conclusion

**Use it for “Scanning,” not “Reading” I am not saying we should ban Dark Mode. I use it for my media apps (Netflix, Spotify) because visuals look great in the dark. But for text-heavy tasks; **reading articles, debugging code, or writing documentation. Light Mode (or a low-contrast “Sepia” mode) is scientifically superior for readability.

Dark Mode is an Aesthetic Choice, not a Health Choice. If you find yourself squinting at your “cool” black terminal, do your eyes a favour:

Turn on the lights.
