OpenAI-backed humanoid robots are entering homes 👀

1X — a startup founded in Norway and now based in Palo Alto — has opened a 58,000 sq ft factory in California to build its NEO humanoid robots.

The goal? 10,000 robots per year now… and 100,000 annually by 2027.

NEO is a $20,000 home robot designed to help with everyday tasks like: • Folding laundry • Cleaning up • Tidying rooms • And eventually even elder care

Unlike many robotics companies, 1X builds its motors, batteries, and electronics in-house to move faster and reduce supply chain risks.

Right now, most humanoid robots are still made by Chinese companies, making 1X’s US manufacturing push a major shift in the robotics race.

But the company is also being realistic: Humans still handle most factory assembly, and many complex tasks are currently assisted by remote human operators while the AI continues learning.

The humanoid robot era is starting — but full autonomy is still a work in progress. 🤖
