The Night Nobody Woke Up
An herbal sleep exploration.

A scratch at the door.
Was it real? Or was it part of the dream I thought I was having?
No – it was our cat. He wanted in.
I crawled out of bed groggily and let him in, then stood there in a daze staring at my phone. 9am. I’d slept until 9am. For context, sleeping in for me means 7:30. On weekdays I’m usually up by 6.
Within moments I was awake and alert – but my husband was still out like a light. So I got dressed quietly and moved around the house doing small chores, trying not to make noise.
11am. Still sleeping.
And so was our property mate out in the Chrysalis.
Every single person in my household was asleep – except my dog and me.
What happened?
Well. I’ve been working with herbs for the vast majority of my life. And when the people I love struggle, I struggle too. Sleep is one of the great quiet crises of our time.
Did you know that sleep deprivation has historically been used as a torture method?
POWs subjected to prolonged sleeplessness alongside psychological stress like enforced mathematics – a combination designed to break a person from the inside out. No physical marks. Just a mind and body slowly coming apart at the seams.
We still do this to ourselves voluntarily. Every night.
Sleep isn’t a luxury and it isn’t laziness. It’s not even something to optimize around or sacrifice at the altar of productivity.
Sleep is where your body repairs itself. Where memories consolidate and trauma processes. Where your immune system does its most critical work. Where your cardiovascular system exhales. Where your metabolism resets.
Quite literally – the human body cannot survive without it.
We have somehow built an entire culture around deprivation of one of the most fundamental biological necessities we have. And then we wonder why we’re broken.
The numbers are sobering.
In the United States alone, roughly one in three adults is chronically sleep deprived – getting less than the seven hours their body requires to function. Clinical data shows a stark divide in health, safety, and lifespan outcomes between those who sleep and those who don’t. Seven to nine hours isn’t a suggestion. It’s a biological baseline.
One. In. Three.
That’s not a personal failing. That’s a cultural emergency.
So I made something about it.
After a few weeks deep in a research rabbit hole, I’d devised a herbal blend specifically formulated for sleep. But here’s the thing nobody tells you about medicinal herbs —
Some of them taste like mouldy dirt. Others like raw mushrooms with the soil still on them. A few are bitter enough to make you question your life choices.
So I needed a delivery system. Something that would carry the medicine without making the experience of taking it feel like a punishment.
I used chocolate.
The first batch wasn’t even for my household.
My cousin needed it first – a big guy, heavy into martial arts and manual labour, someone whose body works hard and rarely gets the deep recovery sleep it deserves. He didn’t mind dark chocolate, so the first edition was dark. He reported back. It worked.
The second batch was for my husband.
My husband despises dark chocolate. Says it tastes like dirt. Which is ironic, because that’s essentially what some of these herbs taste like – but we don’t need to tell him that.
So I worked with white chocolate for the first time, carefully tempering it into layers, sandwiching the herb blend between them to soften the flavour as much as possible. I added lemon zest and crumbled freeze-dried raspberries on top. Tart against sweet against bitter. A careful balance.
When I blended the herbs together, it was meditative. Hours with a coffee grinder and mortar and pestle, grinding and sifting and regrinding, coaxing the herbs into the finest powder I could manage. A couple hours of repetitive, rhythmic work, the kind that quiets your mind and lets your hands remember they know what they’re doing.
I giggled at myself somewhere around hour two, realizing I was still grinding.
Then came the alchemy part. Almond butter. Honey. Vanilla. Watching the dry herbs transform into something wet and living, their flavours beginning to wake up. The vanilla and honey aromas rising. Then the deeper notes, the barks, the medicinal herbal undertones, all of it starting to speak together for the first time.
That’s when you know you’re close. When the blend stops being individual ingredients and becomes a conversation.
Six carefully chosen herbs, each selected because they amplify rather than counteract one another.; Passionflower, Valerian, Ashwagandha, Lemon balm, and a few others I keep close, my private recipe, refined through weeks of research and the intuitive listening that comes from truly loving what plants can do.
Then came the chocolate. The tempering, the layering, the careful sandwich of herb blend between melted white chocolate, watching it set, cooling into something beautiful and intentional and done.
That first night, we all took a piece.
I woke at nine the next morning, groggy and confused about why I’d slept so deeply. My husband was still out. Eleven o’clock came and went, still sleeping. Gabby in the Chrysalis didn’t surface until nearly noon.
Three people… one bark… sleeping deeper and longer than they had in months.
The herbal chocolate bark had worked.
Yes, I know sleep deprivation is an epidemic. I know many of you are taking pharmaceuticals, trying everything, desperate for just one good night of rest.
I’m not here to tell you those aren’t valid. They are, and sometimes you need them.
But I’m asking you to consider something: what if you could resort back to herbs? What if the plants that have been helping humans sleep for thousands of years could help you too?
They can.
I’ve seen it, I’ve made it.
And if you’re curious what that looks like, if you want to know what happens when three people take a piece of herbal chocolate bark and wake up nine, eleven, almost noon hours later, well…
You know where to find me.
