Is GoPro Leaving Beginners Behind with the Mission 1?

GoPro is trying to redefine the action camera category. After their almost no success of Hero 13 and the downfall of their own company, they already announced the launch of a new camera series, the “Mission 1”, to regain their previous status. With this new action camera series, they have set a new standard and benchmark for the action camera market. As they once pioneered the action camera market, they are likely to set the standard for the best action camera.
A Spec Sheet That Changes the Game
Their 8K video, fully open-gate recording, interchangeable-lens system, 1-inch sensor, 5+ hours of recording time, 50MP image capture, and AI-powered neural processing capabilities make the “MISSION 1” camera lineup a killing action camera in the market. They are going to release it on May 28, 2026, and anyone can preorder it from May 21, 2026.
The Pricing Problem
But what about the pricing? Action cameras are popular among beginner or amateur creators and extreme sports hobbyists. And they have a very limited budget. They cannot have expensive cameras, lenses, or accessories.
As far as we can tell, GoPro announced the prices for its new lineup. The standard Mission 1 will be $599, while the Mission 1 Pro and Mission 1 Pro ILS will both be for $699 before tax. You can get a discount if you purchase the subscriptions, but that also adds to your money bag in the future. And all those prices are basic. For additional accessories, you will need to pay more. And for Mission 1 Pro ILS, you also must pay for the lens you’ll use. And I am not sure if those lenses’ autofocus will ever work. So, for sure, the Mission 1 Pro ILS will be used only by professionals.
Competition Is Cheaper — and Good Enough
On the other hand, the closest rival, DJI’s Osmo Action Pro 5 and Osmo Action 6, both retail for way less than this price. Osmo Action 5 Pro Adventure combo prices are currently $368, whereas Osmo Action 6 Enhanced combo prices are $496. And these 2 action cameras can capture 4K 120fps, which is good enough for beginners and amateurs.
Currently, the top brands offering 8K video are Insta360 and DJI, and their prices are lower than GoPro’s. This is a huge difference and a key decision maker for amateur and beginner content creators.
What Beginners Actually Want
As a beginner videographer or amateur content creator, like me, what do they do? They just put out their camera, press the recording button, and start shooting. After their shoot, they download the footage onto the computer, do some basic editing, or maybe not, and then straight upload it to the platform they prefer.
They know resolution and fps; very few have a concept of flat profiling and color grading, and almost none have any idea about open-gate recording, timecode, multiple-camera shooting, or synchronization. When they see an event they like or something interesting, they start recording and upload it as soon as possible, mostly unedited.
They prefer better performance in low light by default and very good slow-motion video, but have very little concept of manual focusing while shooting or open-gate recording for cropping for multiple platforms. And if they do, they do not care about missing a few missing pixels or less sharp footage.
For professionals, these are very important things, but not for amateur creators. Amateur creators' preferences are entirely different. That’s where action cameras are shining. These cameras provide very good footage with a very basic setup change, or almost no change at all; default settings work very well in almost every condition.
The amateur content creators do not want pixel-perfect footage. They just want a good video, and with the current action camera lineup, you can upload it directly to the video platform without editing. The camera already does that for you.
When creators grow and earn from their content, they begin exploring advanced techniques such as flat profiles, color grading, manual focus, multi-camera setups, and open-gate shooting. These are exactly the areas where GoPro’s Mission 1 series is focusing.
And that’s why there is probably a chance that GoPro might not be popular among beginner or amateur content creators, but among professionals.
The Market Response and What’s Next
Given the price difference, features specifically designed toward professionals might be viewed differently by amateur and beginner content creators. They might want to stick with the current popular brands, such as DJI, Insta360, or Akaso. Those companies provide and listen to amateur content creators.
And I am waiting to see how DJI moves. There is a chance that DJI will release a new firmware update for its latest Osmo Action 6, which will enable 8K open-gate capture with its current 1/1.1-inch sensor.
