I watched Veerabhadrudu / Karuppu and here’s what I feel

I am not a die hard movie fan, infact I watch movies once in a blue, so treat this as a noob review and nothing more

I was supposed to do rock climbing on a fine sunday, but the heat forced a sudden change of plans to watch a movie then available and that’s how Karuppu happened.

I was quite excited by the anatagonist’s intro, Baby Krishna, solid opening of problem statement, court scene and explanation of status quo. Trisha’s intro was done a bit shabby, came across as weak, more comedian oriented and very side character vibes. I heard my brother say the other day that the entire movie was initially written to have Trisha be the main lead, more like a female oriented story, but later transformed to accomodate Suriya. With this pretext, it seems like Trisha’s character was quite sidelined.

Suriya being one of my favorite hero’s had a strong entry, but I was quite disappointed with the screenplay. Too much of graphics and un-realism and unnecessary elevations overplayed the GOD’s innate ability. I was happy with the red screen though.

The best part of the film was the dialogue, “JUST GOD THINGS BRO”, loved the swag, the delivery, the timing and the usage. On point.

First half landed quite decent with the loss of case, left the viewers yearning for what would follow.

I was expecting more a JAI BHIM level character arc for the human-Suriya and being able to defeat the court being human, but somewhere felt a logical failure when he had to step up to go to GOD mode for being able to solve problems. Like does that mean being human is insufficient to solve the court problems? I mean doesn’t that defeat the plot of premise. Somewhere an anti-pattern emerged.

Second half was a big meh, I was totally taken aback by the story line and the progression, completely forced elevations, no real problem statement and use of GOD powers. By absolute first principles, human can’t defeat GOD. Story just ends there. Why drag it for like an hour and half? Weak antagonist play completely looking foolish to let GOD win. Unnecessary.

I love Gopala Gopala, a god-human interaction movie, where till the very end the narration was kept gripping and story naturally fit in. We needed god being able to philosophically lead humans to perfection not show of GOD skills supported by mediocre VFX.

The end scene fights were liked by some, I have seen better in Kantara, so this fell flat to me. The only joke for which the entire theatre exploded in unison was about Baby not fearing GOD because he might be converted, and I liked the positioning of the joke too.

After watching Trisha in PS, this was an absolute let down in terms of character development. Started off strong but continued to play weak, and was extremely underwhelming to watch her conclude the show.

Overall it was a 2.75/5 for me, post creds made me cry to see Suriya sign up for part two, but its okay, we have beared Singham for so long 😔.
