Everyone Wants Honest Feedback Until They Receive It

We say we value honesty, but the moment it challenges our ego, we start looking for reasons to ignore it.

There is something interesting about human nature.

Almost everyone says they want honest feedback. We ask our friends what they think. We ask our managers how we are doing. Writers ask readers to be brutally honest. Creators ask for opinions. Businesses ask customers to leave reviews.

But the moment the feedback isn’t what we hoped for, everything changes.

Suddenly, the person giving feedback becomes “negative.” We start explaining ourselves. We defend our decisions. We look for reasons why they misunderstood us instead of asking whether they might have seen something we missed.

The truth is, most of us don’t actually want honesty.

We want confirmation.

We want people to tell us we’re doing well. We want reassurance that we’re on the right path. There is nothing wrong with enjoying encouragement. We all need it. But encouragement alone cannot help us grow.

Growth usually begins with discomfort.

I have noticed this in writing. The comments that stayed with me were rarely the ones saying, “Great article.” They felt good for a moment, but they didn’t change the way I wrote.

The comments that made me stop and think were different. Someone pointed out that my opening was weak. Another person said my message was clear but too long. Sometimes an editor removed entire paragraphs that I believed were important.

At first, it stung.

Nobody enjoys seeing their work criticised, especially after spending hours creating it.

But after the emotion settled, I often realised they were right.

The same is true outside of writing.

A chef improves because customers are honest about the food. A leader becomes better because employees speak up. An athlete grows because a coach points out every mistake. A business survives because someone notices what isn’t working before it’s too late.

Honest feedback is not an attack.

It is information.

Of course, not every opinion deserves your attention. Some people criticise just to feel important. Others speak without understanding your goals. Learning whose advice to trust is just as important as learning to accept criticism.

But dismissing every uncomfortable opinion is another kind of mistake.

Our ego has a clever way of protecting us. It whispers that everyone else is wrong. It tells us they don’t understand. It convinces us that changing would mean admitting failure.

In reality, changing often means admitting that we are still learning.

And that is a strength, not a weakness.

The people I admire most are not the ones who never make mistakes. They are the ones who can hear difficult truths without making the conversation about their pride. They ask questions instead of making excuses. They listen before they respond.

That kind of confidence is rare.

It is easy to accept praise because it asks nothing from us.

Honest feedback asks us to improve.

Maybe that’s why it feels so uncomfortable.

The next time you ask someone for their opinion, ask yourself one question before they answer.

Do you really want honesty?
