As we grow up, most of us eventually have to leave our homes to move forward in life. Some leave for higher education, while others move to metro cities to build their careers. But as we leave our hometowns, a piece of us stays behind. We usually don’t realize it until much later — when we’ve achieved what we once dreamed of, yet still find ourselves missing the place where we truly belonged.

The Day I Left Home

I still remember how excited I was when I left home for the first time to move to Chandigarh for a course I wanted to pursue. Back then, all I could think about was finally experiencing a big city and fulfilling all the desires I couldn’t in the rural town where I grew up.

At that time, my dreams and ambitions had completely taken over my mind. I was convinced that my future was waiting somewhere beyond my hometown. I dreamed of settling in a big city where everything seemed possible, and the future looked brighter than ever.

New Cities, New Dreams

When I moved to Chandigarh, I felt ecstatic. I had always heard about Chandigarh in songs, and moving there felt like a huge achievement for me. I felt like I was on top of the world as I finally got the chance to experience everything that a big city had to offer. Everything felt different, exciting, and full of life.

I looked forward to living independently, meeting new people, making friends, attending parties, and going on trips. And I truly experienced all of those things with immense joy.

But there was one thing I never expected.

No matter where I was — with friends, in class, or just out exploring the city — I found myself constantly thinking about home.

That surprised me because I had never imagined missing my hometown after finally moving to Chandigarh. After all, Chandigarh was everything I had ever wanted.

After spending nearly two years there, completing my course, and working for a while, I decided to move to Delhi for better career opportunities.

Delhi wasn’t entirely new to me. I had visited it many times during my summer vacations because my Massi lived there. So, after feeling that I had experienced everything I wanted in Chandigarh, I was excited to begin the next chapter of my professional life in Delhi.

This time, however, the excitement felt different. I had already experienced the independence, parties, trips, and everything I had once dreamed of. I wasn’t chasing those things anymore.

As I started working in Delhi, I witnessed a side of the world that I had never truly wished to see — but perhaps it was the side I needed to experience the most.

Delhi introduced me to life’s harsh realities and taught me some of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned. From office politics to people pretending to be friends for personal gain, I saw realities that no one really prepares you for.

Looking back, Delhi became one of the most important chapters of my life. Everything I disliked about that phase eventually became lessons that shaped me into a stronger, better version of myself.

The Things I Never Thought I’d Miss

As I became overwhelmed by Delhi’s fast-paced life, I slowly started missing the things I never thought I would miss when I first stepped out of my hometown.

After living in Delhi for several years, I found myself longing for the beauty and peace of my hometown. And today, that peace feels like pure bliss.

I often remembered the chilly winter mornings, stepping outside my house to breathe the cold air wrapped in a blanket of fog. I missed those quiet moments more than I ever imagined.

I even started missing my visits to the countryside whenever I felt tired or mentally exhausted. Even the taste of homemade food began to feel less like a meal and more like a comforting reminder of home.

In the end, the biggest thing I longed for wasn’t something I could find in any big city. It was that small piece of my hometown that had quietly stayed with me all along.

After spending years in different cities, I’ve realized that the most beautiful thing I miss isn’t the places themselves — it’s the peace, simplicity, and sense of belonging that my hometown gave me. It keeps me connected to my roots in a way no city ever could.

What Migration Really Taught Me

Migration isn’t just about changing locations. It’s about carrying one life into another while leaving a part of yourself behind.

As a kid, I wanted nothing more than to leave my small town and move to a bigger city. I believed happiness, success, and a better future existed somewhere else.

Today, after living in different cities and experiencing everything I once wished for, I’ve realized something I never understood back then.

I’m genuinely grateful that I left my hometown and experienced life in bigger cities. Those years taught me lessons that I could never have learned if I had stayed where I grew up. They showed me the realities of life, challenged me, helped me mature, and shaped the person I am today.

But those experiences also gave me something I never expected — they made me love my hometown even more.

Sometimes, you have to step away from a place to truly understand its value. Distance has a way of revealing what familiarity often hides.

We may leave our hometowns, but we never really leave them.

The streets where we grew up, the familiar faces, the quiet mornings, the food, the seasons, and the feeling of belonging — they continue to live within us, no matter how far we go.

Perhaps that’s what migration really teaches us.

Sometimes, the place we spend years trying to leave becomes the place we spend the rest of our lives missing.

A heartfelt thank you to Parvathi J, and Supriya for sharing such a thoughtful prompt. It resonated perfectly with where I am in life and inspired me to write this piece.
