Something’s not right. I could feel eyes on my back. Someone was watching me.
I walked faster and faster. I turned around to see if anyone was following me. But the streets were empty, as always.
I was used to walking home this late. But this feeling… This was the first time.
I somehow made it to my apartment and let out a sigh of relief. Then I noticed it. The door was already unlocked.
I took a little step back. Who is it? Robber?
Should I call the cops? No… No, that would make it worse.
Today was already bad enough. I couldn’t even do what I set out to do.
I entered my apartment and set my camera bag down on the table by the entrance. I couldn’t see anyone. Everything was dark.
I tried switching on the lights. But they didn’t work. My senses told me something was really wrong here.
The apartment felt strange. Not empty. Occupied.
I thought about escaping. But I couldn’t do that. There was something I had to do. My room. I had to get there.
Something important was in there. More important than me. More important than my life. I couldn’t just leave it there. It would be truly sad.
So I walked toward my room. Careful not to make a sound. Slowly. Steadily.
I held the door handle and cautiously opened it.
“Aaaaah!”
Something slammed into me between the legs, and I collapsed into my room.
“Who the…”
The stranger grabbed my hands and pinned them behind my back.
Then the sounds came. Bootsteps.
A voice spoke from behind me. “Mr Vulkan. You’re under arrest for stalking and unlawful surveillance. You have the right to remain silent…”
Shit. Shit. Shit. How did they know?
I struggled as another officer put the handcuffs on my wrists.
“No, no. Why are you doing this?” I cried. “I love her. It’s love. Why are you tainting our love?”
Other officers had already started barging into the room, tearing down her photos and souvenirs.
They were talking about evidence. About burning things.
“No. No. No,” I yelled. “I’ll kill you. I’ll kill you. Don’t touch…”
Something struck the back of my neck, and my vision started to blur.
The last thing I saw was one of them tearing her photograph in half. Then everything went dark.
