Help! I can’t stop doomscrolling! Am I too far gone at this point? It’s harmful but addictive at the same time! Wait, don’t disturb me, please.
Doomscrolling, in layman’s terms, refers to the activity wherein one partakes in an endless loop of scrolling through video after video media, consisting of various niches as well as the fixed algorithm tailored to one’s interests. Instagram Reels, TikTok Reels, Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts, name it all! In just a single tap or scroll, your brain gets fixated on this mechanism. One falls into this rabbit hole for minutes, then hours, thus overthrowing productivity.
The user experience of such is designed for instant gratification and typically spans a short duration compared to traditional videos, which can take several minutes or hours. A short attention span develops over time, and you’re gonna find yourself bored with mundane tasks, agitated by, or unable to sit still during long periods of activity.
Keep in mind. You’re probably not actually addicted to your phone; you’re addicted to these several apps, especially the uncertainty of what to look forward to next. What interesting thing happens next? This instant gratification of dopamine per video is what fuels the addiction. Our fingers can’t help but reflexively open it whenever we are bored at home, to kill time, during break periods, or at work gaps. Maybe you’re also running away from something or responsibilities. Even as we wake up, while we eat, and so on and on.
Eh, this reel is boring. Will the next video be entertaining enough for my precious attention? If I scroll enough more, it’ll be enough in no time!

But what really are the unnoticeable, slow energy-sucking side effects of doomscrolling?
- Hearing things or nonstop last song syndrome from watching too much
- Shortened attention span and urge to scroll and scroll
- Inability to sit still and focus during longer periods of time
- Brain fog and loss of the ability to think critically
- Overstimulation and high levels of cortisol
- May hinder you from your short & long-term goals or workloads
- Slowly draining your life force and life purpose
How do we actually break this? Every minute you spend scrolling is time you can never get back. Time cannot be taken back, only you can prevent what to do in the next few hours. Allocate it to more productive activities, or start or finish those you have been procrastinating on. Let’s see the following approaches.
Set a strict deadline or timer for yourself.
Only you can break free from this loop. Set multiple alarms, app restrictions, or minimalist layouts. Maybe some timed extensions or screentime controls. No buts or one more. Just like how a baking or cooking timer rings, you too should stop. You wouldn’t want your brain fried like a piece of toasted bread, would you?
Keep your mind busy and pre-occupied all the time. Both inside and outside your house.
Don’t scroll during breaks; do something else instead. If you do have free time, take a rest, go for walks, garden, do landscaping, and more. You will realize you have a lot to do for the rest of the day. Invest in your meaningful hobbies or sidelines.
Force your brain to think of the doomscrolling as a boring activity.
Re-wire your brain to think and convince yourself that you’re bored of scrolling. That it’s no longer enough and there are far more interesting things to do.
Lock your phone in another room or closet.
Place your phone somewhere you can’t easily reach, whether it’s in another room, inside a drawer, or even locked in a closet for a while. The extra effort of getting up can interrupt the habit and give you a moment to ask yourself, “Do I really need to check my phone right now?” Sometimes, putting distance between you and your phone is all it takes to regain control.
Delete and uninstall all of the applications completely.
That’s it. If none of the above-mentioned solutions worked. End of the line. If it’s out of your control, force yourself to delete every single app on every device.
As we end, hopefully you have decided to quit your doomscrolling journey too. It’s not an easy one but do try to limit it slowly day by day. Then you’ll never doomscroll again. If you keep on craving it, it’s gonna be an addiction difficult to cure. You would be an empty shell compared to who you were before all of this.
Your future self will thank you for the choices you are about to make now. Live life by touching the grass and feeling it, not injecting every radiation, exposure, and dopamine into your neurons. If it’s still not convincing enough, then my time here is done. Goodbye.
