The Contradiction of The Eyes

If He Doesn’t Like Me, Why Do His Eyes Say Otherwise?

That’s probably what everyone asks themselves when someone they like clearly says they don’t feel the same — yet their eyes seem to follow you everywhere like you’re the main character in a movie you never auditioned for.

And the real question isn’t whether they like you or not.

It’s this:

Do they like you… or do they just like your attention?

Spoiler: it’s usually the second.

Unfortunately, I didn’t come to that realization through wisdom.

I came to it through experience. Of course.

In my sophomore year of college, I fell in love with a guy I’ll call Ben.

We weren’t close. Not even a little bit. But we had history — which, apparently, is all it takes for your brain to start writing a full romance storyline with zero confirmation.

We used to play tag and hide-and-seek together in elementary school. Same friend group, same chaos, same childhood innocence.

And then, like normal people, we grew up.

Different schools. Different lives.

We became strangers with shared memories.

Which should’ve stayed exactly that.

But no.

Because suddenly, he was everywhere.

Or maybe — I just started noticing him everywhere.

Either way, it felt suspicious.

At first, it was just passing moments.

Walking by each other. Sitting in the same space. Existing in the same general area like two people who definitely do not have a storyline.

And then came the looks.

Not just quick glances.

No.

The kind of looks that linger just a little too long. The kind that make your brain go:

Wait… what was that?

And instead of ignoring it like a normal, emotionally stable person —

I analyzed it.

Thoroughly.

Like it was a research project.

Because when you like someone, logic quietly exits the room.

And delusion? Oh, she moves in permanently.

I told myself it meant something.

That maybe he felt it too.

That maybe he was just… shy.

That maybe he didn’t know how to express it.

(Meanwhile, he expressed absolutely nothing. But let’s not focus on that.)

So I filled in the gaps for him.

Every look became a message.

Every moment became a sign.

Every coincidence became fate.

I wasn’t falling for him.

I was falling for a version of him I created in my head.

A very well-developed version, by the way. Deserved an award.

And the worst part?

Delusion doesn’t feel like delusion when you’re inside it.

It feels like hope.

Which is honestly just delusion in a prettier outfit.

Eventually, I got tired.

Tired of overthinking.

Tired of guessing.

Tired of building a relationship that only existed in my imagination.

So I did something bold.

Or stupid.

Depends how you look at it.

I told him.

I don’t remember exactly what I said.

I just remember standing there, heart racing, fully convinced that maybe — just maybe — all those looks meant something.

That maybe I wasn’t completely insane.

He looked at me and said:

“Why would I if I don’t feel the same way?”

Oh.

Okay.

Right.

Just like that.

No hesitation. No confusion. No hidden meaning for me to analyze later.

Just a clean, direct answer.

Which, ironically, was the one thing I had been avoiding the entire time.

And in that moment, everything collapsed.

All the looks.

All the “signs.”

All the moments I thought meant something.

Gone.

Heartbreak is one thing.

But realizing you broke your own heart?

That’s a different kind of pain.

But wait — because it gets better.

(Not actually. It gets worse.)

After I poured my feelings out and got rejected, I asked him for one simple thing:

Not to tell anyone.

Just that.

Basic human decency. Nothing crazy.

He said okay.

He told everyone.

Amazing.

Love that for me.

So now, not only was I heartbroken —

I was also publicly heartbroken.

Which is just… a beautiful combination, really.

Moving on wasn’t instant.

It wasn’t some dramatic moment where I suddenly became a new person.

It was slow.

Painfully slow.

At first, I avoided him.

Then I stopped checking for him.

Then, eventually, I stopped caring.

And somewhere in that process —

I became better.

Not because of him.

But because I stopped centering my world around someone who never even tried to be in it.

And that’s when it happened again.

The looks.

His eyes still lingered.

Still followed.

Still paused just long enough to feel familiar.

And for a second — just a second —

I almost questioned it again.

But this time?

I didn’t fall for it.

Because I wasn’t the same person anymore.

I wasn’t searching for meaning.

I wasn’t hoping for something more.

I wasn’t turning glances into confessions.

I was just… observing.

And that’s when it finally clicked.

It was never about hidden feelings.

It was about attention.

Because when I stopped giving him mine —

when I stopped reacting, stopped looking back, stopped existing in a way that fed his ego —

that’s when his attention came back.

Not because he liked me.

But because I wasn’t giving him what I used to.

And that realization?

It hurt.

But it also freed me.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

Some people don’t miss you.

They miss how you made them feel about themselves.

So no —

his eyes were never contradicting anything.

I was.

I was the one turning moments into meaning.

Glances into feelings.

Silence into something it was never meant to be.

And once I stopped doing that —

everything became clear.

You don’t need to analyze someone’s eyes to understand how they feel about you.

If they like you, you’ll know.

Not because of how they look at you —

but because of how they choose you.
