Green Hydrogen Mission: Reality Check in India

India’s change toward clean energy with the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in January 2023 by the Government of India. The financial allocation of ₹19,744 crore, India targets to production of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. This expected to attract investments of over ₹8 lakh crore, to create more than 6 lakh jobs, and reduce fossil fuel imports.

What is Green Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is hydrogen extracted using renewable energy resources like solar and wind through the process of electrolysis. In addition, it is considered clean because it emits zero carbon during production. It also seen as a promising solution for decarbonizing sectors such as steel, fertilizers, transport, shipping, and power generation.

India has made some achievements so far…!

Certification systems and infrastructure are developed. Policy support and schemes have been introduced. Electrolysis manufacturing capacity is growing. Major companies are investing in hydrogen projects. Along the ambitious vision, the mission faces several challenges that demand a reality check.

High production cost-The biggest challenge is cost. Green hydrogen is expensive than grey hydrogen. Not affordable for large-scale industrial use. Slow progress- The actual progress is slower than expected but India’s goal is ambitious. Only 8,000 tonnes per year is the commissioned capacity by 2026.

Water requirement-Hydrogen requires significant water resources. In water-stressed areas, this becomes a challenge. Infrastructure Issues-Refueling stations, special storage systems, safe transport networks these are essential facilities need in this process. However, these challenges, the opportunities remain substantial. Green hydrogen can strengthen India’s energy security, reduce carbon emissions, promote industrial system and create new economic opportunities.

In conclusion, Green Hydrogen Mission is a bold step toward a sustainable future of India. Success will depend upon faster execution and policy support. If these challenges are addressed early, green hydrogen could play a transformative role in sustainable India’s future. Green hydrogen has great potential, but success depends on turning effective plans into real action.
