So… What Can You Actually Do With an MLS?

One of the most frustrating conversations I see online is the constant debate over whether an MLS is “worth it.” Usually, the discussion centers on library jobs. If someone can’t find a library position immediately after graduating, people start questioning the value of the degree itself. The problem is that these conversations often assume that an MLS only prepares someone for one career path, and that’s simply not true.

Yes, many MLS graduates go on to become public librarians, academic librarians, archivists, digital librarians, research librarians, or instruction librarians. Those are all valuable careers, and they’re often what people envision when they apply to graduate school. But focusing exclusively on those titles misses what the degree is actually teaching.

At its core, an MLS is an information degree.

The degree teaches people how to find information, evaluate sources, organize knowledge, conduct research, manage systems, and communicate complex ideas clearly. Libraries are one place where those skills are used, but they are far from the only place.

Once you start thinking about the degree in terms of skills instead of job titles, a much broader picture begins to emerge.

For example, many MLS graduates successfully transition into careers such as the following:

• Data Analyst
• Knowledge Manager
• Content Manager
• Market Research Analyst
• UX Researcher
• Health Information Specialist
• Government Information Specialist
• Publishing Professional
• Nonprofit Program Manager
• Information Governance Specialist

At first glance, some of these roles may seem completely unrelated to librarianship. In reality, they’re built on many of the same competencies. Organizations need people who can locate information, determine whether it’s reliable, organize it effectively, and help others use it to make decisions. That role is precisely what information professionals train for.

I’ve seen this firsthand throughout my career. While I’ve worked in libraries, I’ve also used my MLS background in legal research, business research, content strategy, digital engagement, publishing, and coaching. None of those opportunities appeared because I knew how to shelve books. They appeared because I knew how to research, analyze information, and translate complex topics into something people could understand.

Ironically, I think these skills are becoming more valuable, not less.

As artificial intelligence becomes more common, people often focus on its ability to generate information. What gets overlooked is the growing need for people who can verify information, provide context, identify inaccuracies, and organize knowledge in ways that are actually useful. We don’t have an information shortage. We have a shortage of clarity.

That’s why I believe many MLS graduates underestimate their own value. They describe themselves by where they’ve worked rather than by what they know how to do. A librarian who has spent years conducting research, teaching digital literacy, managing databases, developing programs, and helping people navigate complex systems possesses skills that extend well beyond a library building.

The question isn’t whether an MLS can lead to a library career. Of course, it can.

The more interesting question is how many industries need people who can solve information problems.

The answer is probably far more than most people realize.
