How to Partition a Continent?

In Five Minutes or Less (A British Guide )

So, you’ve spent two centuries running an empire. You’ve taken the spices, traded the tea, made everyone wear wool in 40-degree heat, and built a few railways so everyone knows you mean business. But now it’s 1947, your own economy is in the bin after a couple of localized European misunderstandings, and it’s time to pack up the silver.

There’s just one tiny detail left: dividing an entire subcontinent of 400 million people who have lived together for millennia.

How do you handle a operation of this magnitude? Easy.

You call in a lawyer who has literally never set foot east of Paris.

Step 1: Find a Man Who Doesn’t Know Where He Is

Enter Cyril Radcliffe. Cyril was a brilliant London barrister. He was hard-working, precise, and most importantly, gloriously clueless about India. He had never seen the terrain, didn’t speak the languages, and couldn’t tell a Punjabi wheat field from a Bengali jute farm.

Why was this a feature, not a bug? Impartiality, of course! If you know absolutely nothing about the land, the people, or the culture, you can’t possibly be biased. It’s the ultimate form of British fairness: pure, unadulterated, mathematical ignorance.

Step 2: Set a Generous Deadline (6 Weeks)

When tasked with redrawing the geography of a massive, ancient landmass, any reasonable civil servant might ask for a few years, or perhaps a map that wasn’t printed on a napkin.

Cyril was given 40 days.

Nothing speeds up complex geopolitical diplomacy quite like a blistering summer in Lahore with no air conditioning and a ticking clock. The logic was sound: if you do it quickly enough, nobody will have time to complain until after you’ve already boarded the boat home.

Step 3: Draw Some Lines (Try Not to Hit the Furniture)

Armed with outdated census data, bad maps, and a heavy dose of panic, the Radcliffe Line was born.

The precision was breathtaking. The new border managed to:

Cut directly through private farms, leaving the kitchen in India and the bedroom in Pakistan.

Divide vital river systems from the canal networks built to irrigate them.

Separate entire agricultural supply chains, putting the crops on one side of a fence and the processing mills on the other.

It was administrative performance art. A masterpiece of British cartography.

Step 4: Keep It a Surprise!

Naturally, when you’ve drawn a line that determines the citizenship, homes, and survival of 400 million human beings, you announce it immediately, right?

Goodness, no.

The boundary awards were finalized on August 12th, but kept strictly under wraps until August 17th two days after both India and Pakistan declared independence. Why ruin the party with details like “which country you actually live in”? Let everyone celebrate first!

When the lines were finally published, millions of people woke up to discover they were suddenly in the wrong country, sparking the largest forced migration in human history!

Step 5: Catch the Evening Ferry Home

With the ink barely dry on the maps, the Raj wrapped up its trunks, folded its crisp linen suits, and slipped out the back door. Cyril Radcliffe burned his papers, refused his £2,000 fee, and caught the first flight back to London, never to return.

Back in Whitehall, the tea was poured, hands were washed, and everyone agreed it was a jolly tough job, but someone had to do it.

Moral of the story:

If a polite English gentleman ever offers to help you organize your home, lock your front door and hide the pencils.

Happy independence day to all former British subjects, irrespective of which side your grandparents find themselves after partition.
