What If the Simulation Is Just a Story You’re Living In?
Most people ask the wrong question.
What If the Simulation Is Just a Story You’re Living In?

The moment you question the frame, you begin to see beyond it.
Most people ask the wrong question.
“Are we living in a simulation?”
It sounds edgy. It sounds clever. It sounds like you have a podcast mic and a strong opinion about Elon Musk.
But even if the answer is yes, what does it change about your Tuesday?
You still wake up. You still scroll. You still worry. You still get pulled into other people’s drama and headlines and half-truths. You still react like a trained animal to a world you didn’t design.
So here’s the better question:
What’s outside the simulation?
Not outside the world.
Outside the lens.
Because when most people say “simulation,” they imagine computer code. Matrix pods. VR headsets. Some cosmic server farm running Earth 2.0.
I don’t even need that theory to make the point.
The simulation most of us live inside is simpler, and more dangerous, because it feels normal.
It is the narrative layer.
It’s the invisible overlay that tells you what to fear, what to desire, what to believe is possible, what you’re allowed to say out loud, and what you should feel guilty for even thinking.
Not code.
Stories.
Curated reality.
A filter so thick you stop knowing what’s real and what’s produced.
That’s the simulation.
Not the planet.
The perception.
And the wild part is, you can live your entire life inside it without ever noticing. You can be “awake” and still completely programmable. You can reject one narrative and unknowingly accept a different one. You can swap mainstream for alternative and still be trapped in the exact same mechanism.
Different costume, same stage.
Because the simulation doesn’t care which team you’re on.
It only cares that you keep reacting.
That you keep consuming.
That you keep outsourcing your knowing.
If you want a brutal test, try this.
Go one full day without taking an opinion that didn’t come from direct experience.
No hot takes.
No outrage.
No reposting a clip, a headline, a statistic, or a “trust me bro” thread as if it’s your own.
Just observe your life.
Your actual life.
Your body. Your breath. Your immediate environment. Your conversations. Your choices.
Most people can’t do it.
They feel like they are disappearing.
Because the simulation trains you to feel real only when you’re plugged into the feed.
So when you step back, the silence feels like loss.
But it’s not loss.
It’s withdrawal.
That’s when the deeper question starts to surface.
If I’m not being told what to think… what do I actually know?
If I’m not reacting… what do I actually feel?
If I’m not chasing… what do I actually want?
This is where things get uncomfortable, fast.
Because stepping outside the narrative layer exposes a terrifying truth.
A lot of what you call “you” was installed.
Your fears were installed.
Your ambitions were installed.
Your identity was shaped by incentives you never agreed to.
And once you see that, you can’t unsee it.
This is also the moment people start bargaining.
They go looking for a new story to hold onto.
A new tribe.
A new label.
A new certainty.
Anything except the raw unknown of standing in reality without an interpreter.
But here’s the thing.
Outside the simulation isn’t a place.
It’s a state.
It’s the ability to see the frame.
To watch your own mind get pulled.
To feel the emotional hook before it becomes a reaction.
To notice how quickly you are steered.
And then to choose anyway.
Not from fear.
Not from identity.
Not from the need to be right.
From something quieter.
Something steadier.
Something that doesn’t need permission.
Call it presence.
Call it awareness.
Call it truth.
Call it God, if you want.
The label doesn’t matter.
The experience does.
And if this hits a nerve, good.
That’s usually the signal you’re getting close to the edge of the lens.
If you want to go deeper into this exact question, I wrote a longer piece that explores it properly here: **What’s Outside the Simulation? The Ultimate Question**
Because once you stop obsessing over whether reality is simulated…
You start noticing what is actually being simulated.
And more importantly, you start remembering what isn’t.
