The Cost of Being Self-Sufficient
Some of the most self-sufficient people I know would love to be cared for.
The Cost of Being Self-Sufficient

For a long time, I thought being self-sufficient was a good thing.
Actually, let me rephrase that.
I still think it is a good thing.
There is something admirable about being able to take care of yourself. There is something empowering about knowing that if life falls apart tomorrow, you will find a way to keep going. There is something comforting about knowing that your survival does not depend entirely on another person.
The problem is that nobody talks about the cost.
Nobody talks about what happens after years of carrying your own weight.
Nobody talks about what happens when you become so good at handling things alone that people start assuming you don't need help anymore.
Somewhere along the way, people stop checking on you.
Not because they don't care.
Because you look fine.
You always look fine.
You are the one solving problems.
You are the one giving advice.
You are the one holding things together.
You are the one people call when they need something.
And after a while, everybody becomes comfortable with that arrangement.
Including you.
I think one of the loneliest feelings in the world is being known as the strong person when you secretly wish someone would notice that you're tired.
Not tired in a dramatic way.
Not tired because life is falling apart.
Just tired of carrying everything.
Tired of always being okay.
Tired of always finding a way.
Tired of being the person who never seems to need anybody.
The funny thing is that self-sufficient people rarely become self-sufficient because they wanted to.
Most of the time, they became that way because they had to.
Life demanded it.
Circumstances demanded it.
Disappointment demanded it.
At some point, they learned that if something needed to be done, they would probably have to do it themselves.
So they adapted.
And adaptation slowly became identity.
Now everyone praises them for being independent.
Everyone admires how strong they are.
Everyone talks about how resilient they seem.
And sometimes they smile and say thank you.
But secretly, part of them wonders whether anybody realizes that strength can be exhausting too.
I think people often assume that because you can do something alone, you prefer doing it alone.
Those are not the same thing.
Being capable is not the same thing as wanting to carry everything by yourself.
Being independent is not the same thing as never needing support.
Being strong is not the same thing as never wanting someone to lean on.
Some of the most self-sufficient people I know would love to be cared for.
They would love to feel supported.
They would love to know that somebody else can carry the weight for a moment.
They would love to rest.
But when you've spent years convincing the world that you're okay, it becomes difficult to explain that sometimes you're not.
So you keep going.
You handle things.
You figure it out.
You survive.
You do what you've always done.
And life continues.
The older I get, the more I realize that there is nothing wrong with being self-sufficient.
The danger comes when self-sufficiency becomes isolation.
When strength becomes a wall.
When independence becomes an inability to receive care.
Because no matter how capable we are, we were never designed to do life completely alone.
We all need people.
We all need support.
We all need places where we can put our burdens down without feeling guilty.
We all need moments where somebody else says, "I've got this."
Perhaps that is the lesson I am still learning.
That being strong does not mean carrying everything.
That needing people is not weakness.
That accepting help is not failure.
And that sometimes the strongest thing a person can do is admit that they are tired.
Not because they are incapable.
But because they are human.
