Visual Rhythm Without Sound

I am not a musician.

Sound has never been the easiest way for me to understand the world.

As a visual artist and former color and design teacher, I tend to translate ideas into color, line, shape, rhythm, and movement.

These images grew from a simple question:

What if music could be seen instead of heard?

Some people hear music.

I see it.

Not as notes or instruments, but as relationships.

Repetition.

Variation.

Balance.

Movement.

Pause.

The same principles that organize music also organize paintings.

Color echoes color.

Lines wander and return.

Shapes answer one another across space.

The images that follow are not illustrations of music.

They are visual explorations of rhythm, melody, counterpoint, and silence.

Melody

Visually, it becomes a line wandering through space.

Changes direction.

Returns.

Rhythm

Music depends as much on silence as sound.

Paintings depend on space as much as form.

Perhaps that is why these images feel familiar to me.

They are not attempts to depict music.

They are attempts to explore the visual structures that make music possible.
