How to Train Your Brain for RTL Thinking (for Design and Accessibility)

Designing for right-to-left (RTL) languages can feel disorienting if you’ve always worked in left-to-right (LTR) environments. The shift is not just a technical difference, it’s a cognitive adjustment. For designers used to Western conventions, designing for an RTL interface is like suddenly writing with your non-dominant hand; it feels confusing, awkward, and counterintuitive. My own early exposure to Arabic and Persian helped me build my RTL muscles from a young age, but most designers encounter RTL much later and find it to be a challenging mental adjustment.

Why Bidirectionality Feels So Hard

If you’re accustomed to LTR, your mind has built long established instincts like scanning from left to right. Because of this, your attention also anchors to the left, so mirroring elements can feel unnatural at first. In RTL layouts, the starting anchor is on the right, with everything on the interface beginning on the opposite side. The sensation of “this looks backwards” is your LTR mental model clashing with this new orientation. Just like learning to train with your non-dominant hand, it feels unnatural at first, but as you continue to build the muscle, it can start to feel more instinctive and less jarring.

Start With the Flow, Not Just Mirroring

A common mistake is to treat RTL as a perfect mirror of LTR. Although the majority of elements are mirrored, there are exceptions to this that must be considered in order for the interface to feel intuitive for a native speaker. For example, navigation order must be flipped, headings are aligned to the right, content begins on the right and moves leftward, drawers and menus open on the opposite side, etc. Rather than simply mirroring an interface horizontally like a photograph, designing for RTL means starting with logical flow, not just by flipping everything.

What to Mirror — and What Not To

Mirroring in RTL is not absolute. A helpful way to approach it is to think of it as selective mirroring. While overall layout should flip, certain universal or culturally neutral elements should remain as they are. Being intentional about what you flip helps avoid interfaces feeling “off” or uncanny to a native RTL speaker.

Mirror:

  • Menus
  • Navigation bars
  • Spacing
  • Directional icons

Do NOT mirror:

  • Numbers
  • Code snippets
  • Media controls
  • Brand elements

When you mirror layouts, you’re not only changing visual alignment, you’re also changing how people navigate with assistive technology.

  • Screen Readers: Mirrored layouts shift focus order and reading patterns. The starting anchor becomes the rightmost element, so tab and arrow navigation must follow RTL reading flow.
  • Keyboard Navigation: Sequential tabbing and arrow key movement should progress from right to left, matching natural reading and interaction order.
