My Journey with GirlScript Summer of Code Extended Program 2024

When I stumbled upon a LinkedIn post about the GirlScript Summer of Code (GSSoC) 2024 Extended Edition, I had no idea it would become a pivotal moment in my coding journey. The registration link caught my eye, and out of curiosity, I filled in the form, not expecting much. It was September 29, and the program was set to start on October 1.

As October 1 rolled in, I assumed I hadn’t been selected. The day passed without any updates — until later that evening, when an email confirmed my selection! Excitement quickly turned into apprehension as I realized this was my first coding-related program, and I had little knowledge of open-source contributions.

Diving into Open Source

Coincidentally, I had also come across Hacktoberfest 2024, introduced by our Google Developer Group at college. While intrigued by the idea of earning GitHub badges, I was clueless about open-source. Fortunately, on the GSSoC Discord server, I connected with a mentor named Yash, who guided me through creating issues and submitting pull requests (PRs). His support and the tutorials provided by GSSoC set the foundation for my journey.

In the first week, I explored projects and started creating quality issues and PRs. My early contributions were simple tasks like aligning navigation elements and improving CSS. At first, my ideas didn’t catch much attention, but reaching out to project admins on GitHub and LinkedIn helped me get assigned my first issue. With support from peers, I successfully made my first PR, learning valuable lessons about handling conflicts and using branches. By the end of week one, I had 3–4 PRs under my belt.

Challenges and Turning Points

Weeks two and three were tough due to my mid-semester exams. Despite limited contributions during this period, an exciting opportunity emerged afterward. In one project’s Discord server, the admin shared an idea for a core feature. I volunteered, and to my delight, she trusted me with the task. Working on this feature sparked genuine excitement, and I even pitched additional ideas that the admin encouraged me to implement.

This project became the highlight of my GSSoC journey. For the first time, I contributed out of passion rather than just earning points. The experience helped me grow as a developer and taught me the value of meaningful contributions.

A Broader Learning Experience

While contributing to GSSoC, I also completed the Postman Fundamentals Student Expert Challenge, where I learned about APIs, further expanding my skill set.
