The Yankees lost on Wednesday after having four errors

The Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, 8–4, on Wednesday after having four errors and being very sloppy in the field. They had five hits and a season-high tying four errors in this game.

The Yankees are now 3–7 overall against the Blue Jays this season and 1–6 against the Blue Jays in Toronto. They have a hard to believe 11 errors in the seven games they have played at Rogers Centre in Toronto this season.

The previous time that the Yankees had four errors in a game this season was on the second game of the season on March 29 against the Brewers at Yankee Stadium when they won 20–9 in a blowout. The Yankees are now 8–28 when allowing at least five runs this season. They are 3–3 since the All-Star break and with this loss to the Blue Jays they are four games behind the first place Blue Jays in the AL East.

Max Fried allowed six runs in 5.1 innings but four of those runs were earned runs. He allowed six hits and three walks in his 5.1 innings. He did not have his usual command and control.

In sixth inning it looked like his blister issue from before was bothering him since he had a cut on his finger and kept putting his finger against his jersey after pitches. However, Aaron Boone said he was fine. Fried said cut on finger was nothing to worry about after the game.

Two of Fried’s walks came with one out in 5th inning. He did not throw his first curve ball until 45 pitches into the game and later on threw his first changeup. He really relied on fastball and cutter.

Fried has walked three batters in each of his last two starts after walking few than three batters in each of his first 19 starts this season. He has a 6.52 ERA in his last four starts after allowing at least three runs in each of those four starts (three runs in two of the starts and four in the two other starts) to raise his ERA from 1.92 to 2.62. Fried was outstanding in his first 17 starts this season before these last four starts since he allowed two runs or less in 15 of those 17 starts.

Fried has 35 career pickoffs which is most in MLB since 2017. He had a no hitter through the first three innings but then in the fourth inning Vlad Guerrero Jr had an RBI double off of him that scored George Springer and after Addison Barger reached on an infield single, Ernie Clement had an RBI single that scored Guerrero Jr.

Anthony Volpe had a 104 MPH exit velocity homer in the fifth inning to tie the score at two. His homer went into the first row of the stands and was caught by a fan wearing a red Blue Jays jersey. Volpe had previously been 0–6 in the series. Volpe now has 13 homers and 54 RBI this season but a very low .214 average and a .286 OBP. The Yankees play on defense really declined in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Davis Schneider, who had a 14 pitch at-bat in the first game of the series, had a one out walk. Springer walked after Schneider’s at-bat. With Guerrero Jr. at the plate with runners on first and second with one out, a ball got away from Escarra leading to a wild pitch that advanced runners to second and third. Escarra should have and normally would have been able to block that pitch.

Fried then fielded a swinging bunt by Guerrero Jr. near the third base line and had a really tough angle on his throw and it was thrown low leading Escarra not to be able to handle it, which lead to Schneider and Spriner scoring on that play in the fifth after Fried’s error. Jazz Chisholm then got an error after his throw to first after making a catch. He rushed his throw to first after make a leaping catch. That was the second error of the inning.

Aaron Judge hit his 352nd career homer that had a 110 MPH exit velocity to tie the game at four in the top of the sixth inning. The fan tried to catch the ball but bobbled it and the ball went back onto the field. The crew chief reviewed it but determined that the ball landed above te blue line and it was indeed a homer. Judge’s 37 homers are tied with Shohei Ohtani for second in MLB and are two behind Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh. Judge is now in sole possession of 6th place in franchise history in homers after previously being tied with Alex Rodriguez. Judge is six homers behind Yankees legend Yogi Berra for fifth in franchise history.

Judge’s homer came after a Blue Jays error, which was by Guerrero Jr. The Yankees and Blue Jays are actually tied for the eighth most errors in the AL with 52. However, the Yankees had seven errors in this series and the Blue Jays only had two errors. The Yankees have 52 errors in 102 games this season and 11 errors in seven games this season in Toronto.

Judge had a big homer after Yankees were sloppy in the bottom of the fifth inning. Judge with his 352nd career home run, now joins the top 100 all-time MLB homer list as he tied Ryan Braun and Ellis Burks for 99th place. In his 19 games in July, he has seven homers, 17 RBI, five doubles, a .427 OBP and a 1.141 OPS.

Cody Bellinger flat out lost the ball in the almost dark sky and had no idea where it was landing, leading Ernie Clement to get a triple in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bellinger is usually a very reliable outfielder who rarely makes any defensive mistakes. Myles Straw then had hard hit RBI double down the 3rd base line to score Straw and give the Blue Jays a 5–4 lead. They would have the lead for the rest of the game. Later in the bottom of the sixth, Jonathan Loaisiga, who had been struggling with a 9.35 ERA in his last five games, got outfielder Nathan Lukes to fly out to right, which advanced Straw to third.

The Yankees then committed their third error of the game. Ben Rice, who was a catcher in college and in the minor leagues, made an error in the 6th on a ball that was hit basically right to him at first base that he knocked down but could not catch. He deflected it and the ball went in and out of his glove and then went towards the infield grass. The speedy Straw scored on Rice’s error to make it 6–4 and utility infielder Will Wagner was safe at first. That grounder should have been a inning ending grounder to the first baseman but another run scored because of the miscue.

The Blue Jays put pressure on pitchers and on the defense by being aggressive in the count and making a lot of hard contact. The also do not strike out much at all while the Yankees do tend to strikeout a lot. The Blue Jays went a solid 4–13 with runners in scoring position and had just four strikeouts but on the other hand the Yankees had just three at-bats with a runner in scoring position and they had eight strikeouts.

For the team’s fourth error of the game, Jasson Dominguez had a fielding error where he misplayed it and the ball bounced over his head in the 7th that allowed Guerrero Jr. to advance to second and then Bo Bichette had hard hit 2-run homer. He turned a Dominguez single into a double. The Yankees now have 12 errors in 10 games against the Blue Jays the season. The Yankees gave Toronto a lot of extra outs in this game. Yankees had their worst defensive game of the season with four errors and more misplays It was the worst defensive game since this four error game came in a loss and also included a fielder losing the ball in the sky and other miscues.

“Just not good enough,” Boone said about the defensive effort. “We’ve got to obviously tighten it up. Confident we will. We’ll continue to work at it. We have good defenders here, but tonight was obviously a rough night for us.”

Blue Jays starting pitcher Chris Bassitt had 1.89 ERA in his last four games. He was solid in this game allowing three earned runs in 7.1 innings while striking out eight and allowing three solo homers. The first homer he allowed was a Dominguez homer to right center in the second inning. Dominguez had been in an 0–18 slump going into that homer in the second inning off of Bassitt. Bassitt, who finished 10th in Cy Young voting in 2021 and 2023, has allowed three earned runs or less in seven of his last eight games.

Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake both got thrown out of the game in top of 7th out of frustration with strike zone by Blake and overall frustration about the defense and the strike zone by Boone. Boone at first game out to argue since he did not know who had initially gotten thrown out of the game. Boone had his 4th ejection of the season and his 43rd in his eight seasons as Yankees manager. Boone is tied with former Yankees manager Joe Girardi for 35th most ejections of all time. Each of the managers above him on the list have managed at least three more seasons (Girardi managed six more seasons than Boone has).

Chisholm flied out to the warning track for second out of 9th. Dominguez then flied out to Straw in center to end the game.
