年末年始に備えて、ある男が買い出しにでかけました。年末年始はほとんどの店が休みになるので、食料品を多めに買っておく必要がありました。男は、餅、米、ココア、牛乳を買うことを決めていました。しかし、気に入っている酒が売っていたことを思い出して、酒を買います。酒の代金はたったの300円でした。

しかし、餅を買うことを忘れてしまっていて、それにまだ気づきませんでした。男は買い物が終えたので、買った酒を飲んでからタバコを買いに行きました。タバコは500円です。

そして帰ってきてからまた酒を飲みました。そこで男はやっと餅を買うのを忘れていたことに気づきました。餅の代金は600円です。しかし今更また買い出しに行きたくありませんでした。

餅を買うと600円の出費です。酒とタバコを買うことで出費は800円になりました。男は気づきました。餅を買うことを忘れたので、出費は800円ですんだから、余計なものを買うことをせず、節約できたと思ったのです。

もちろんそんなことはありません。買うべきものを買わず、無駄な買い物をしたために無駄遣いしただけでした。

This is a true story inspired by the children’s book “The Goat and the Boy.”

In preparation for the New Year, a man went shopping. Most stores would be closed during the New Year, so he needed to buy more groceries. He decided to buy rice cakes, rice, cocoa, and milk. However, he remembered that his favorite alcohol was on sale, so he decided to buy some. The cost of the alcohol was only 300 yen.

However, he forgot to buy the rice cakes and did not realize it yet. After finishing his shopping, the man drank the alcohol and then went to buy cigarettes, which cost 500 yen.

After returning home, he drank more alcohol. It was then that he finally realized he had forgotten to buy the rice cakes. The cost of the rice cakes was 600 yen. But he didn’t want to go shopping again at that point.

Buying the rice cakes would mean an expense of 600 yen. By buying alcohol and cigarettes, his total expenses amounted to 800 yen. The man thought to himself that since he forgot to buy the rice cakes, he managed to keep his expenses at 800 yen without buying unnecessary things, and he felt he had saved money.

Of course, that was not the case. He simply wasted money by not buying what he should have and making unnecessary purchases.
