A TYPEWRITER WHO MAKES ART WITH LETTERS. When Nothing to Say Becomes Art

Keira Rathbone decided to type in front of her because she desired to type. But she did not have anything to say. She started in 2003. At a time when computers and mobile phones were already becoming the normal way to write, the typewriter seemed to belong to another era.

Instead of seeing the typewriter simply as a machine for writing words, she began using its letters, numbers and symbols to create pictures. Over time, she collected different typewriters and transformed an ordinary office tool into an unexpected artistic instrument.

What makes her work interesting is not simply that she uses an old object. It is that she gives it a function that was never intended for it. In a world where digital tools can reproduce almost everything instantly, she creates something that depends on the physical limitations of the machine itself.

Rathbone shows that originality is not always about creating something that has never existed. Sometimes, it is about making an old object do something nobody thought it could do, and discovering that its limitations are precisely what make it unique.
