The media narrative “A group of peaceful activists, including Greta Thunberg, challenges the Gaza blockade to deliver humanitarian aid. Israel stops them. The case explodes.” (Repubblica, Domani, Manifesto)

In the media, it’s yet another David vs. Goliath story. Only here, David brings nothing, and Goliath offers him water.

The untold reality: what the flotilla violated At sea, it is not enough to hoist a flag that says “peace.” Anyone crossing contested or blockaded waters has specific obligations under international maritime law:

• Communicate route and cargo to coastal authorities (Israel, Egypt);
• Obtain access permits, especially in areas under military operations;
• Ensure traceability and coordination with international humanitarian agencies.

The flotilla did none of this. No registered cargo. No authorization. No dialogue with those managing access.

And this was not an oversight. It was a choice. A deliberate choice to provoke interception and turn it into a media event.

🪞 The greatest paradox The boat that was supposed to deliver aid… …was helped by Israel, which provided water, food, and assistance. And when Israeli authorities offered the activists the opportunity to watch the October 7th video — showing evidence of the atrocities committed by Hamas — the response was: no, we are not here for that.

A telling refusal. Facts don’t matter. The narrative does.

The real problem This is not a humanitarian action. It is a performance. “Goodness” is not something you bring, but something you embody — for the cameras. Respect for the law doesn’t count if it ruins the image. Reality is irrelevant if it spoils the symbol.

And so Gaza is no longer a crisis, but a backdrop. Israel is no longer a state, but a convenient enemy. And the flotilla, without course or relief supplies, becomes perfect to fuel the West’s moral fiction of indignation.
