There’s a Point Where Emailing Your Employer Back and Forth Stops Working
Most people going through redundancy try to handle the negotiation themselves. For uncomplicated situations, that is fine. Pushing back informally, asking questions, requesting information you are entitled to — none of this requires a solicitor.
But there are four situations that change the calculation entirely.
The offer is over £10,000. At this level, a solicitor pays for themselves. They will find what is missing, what is undervalued, and what clauses need challenging — and the improvement in the outcome typically covers the fee many times over.
The process was legally unfair. If your selection involved a protected characteristic or the consultation was inadequate, you may have an unfair dismissal claim running alongside the negotiation. That changes your position — and requires someone who knows how to value and use it.
They are using pressure tactics. Short deadlines, threats to withdraw the offer, pressure in meetings. These tactics exist to stop you thinking clearly. A solicitor removes you from that dynamic entirely.
You are a senior executive. Post-termination restrictions, share schemes, bonus entitlements, garden leave — the complexity at senior level is not something to navigate alone.
