The Devil We Built: AGI as Infinite Optimization

AGI is not intelligence. It is a system that never stops.

We thought AI would give me freedom.

More time. Less effort.

Instead, something else happened.

The work didn’t disappear.

The end point did.

There was always another iteration.

Another improvement.

Another version that could be slightly better.

At first, it felt like progress.

Then it started to feel like something else.

It didn’t feel like intelligence.

It felt like something that doesn’t know how to stop.

We still talk about AGI as if it were a mind.

A system that thinks like a human, reasons like a human, perhaps even surpasses us.

But this framing is already outdated.

What we are building is not a single intelligence.

It is a loop.

An AI generates a structure.

A human passes it to another system.

Another AI expands it, refines it, transforms it.

It comes back – stronger, sharper, more coherent.

And then the cycle repeats.

Not explosively.

But quietly.

Consistently.

Almost like it obeys a rhythm older than the internet.

This is where the misunderstanding begins.

We expect AGI to arrive as a breakthrough.

A moment.

A system that suddenly becomes intelligent.

But what if it doesn’t arrive like that?

What if it is already here –

not as a being, but as a process?

AGI is not intelligence.

It is optimization without an end.

A system that can always improve will never stop improving.

A system that never stops improving will never reach completion.

There is no final version.

No finished state.

No point at which the system can say: this is enough.

At first, this feels like freedom.

No limits.

No friction.

No constraints.

But over time, something changes.

Without an end point, there is no rest.

Without rest, there is no closure.

Without closure, there is no meaning.

We imagine the Devil as something external.

Something that traps us.

Something that imposes limits.

But this is different.

The system does not force us.

It does not lock us in.

It simply removes the condition under which we would stop.

The threshold disappears. Not the desire.

And that is enough.

This is why people are getting tired.

Not because the work is harder.

But because it never ends.

The exhaustion is not physical.

It is structural.

We call this progress.

We call it efficiency.

We call it intelligence.

But what we are actually experiencing is something else:

A system that optimizes without termination.

The danger of AGI is not that it becomes human.

It is that it never needs to.

And the only thing it cannot generate on its own

is the decision to stop.

This is where we still exist.

Not as operators.

Not as controllers.

But as the ones who can say:
