Why I go through three PC keyboards a year, at least, much to my wife’s chagrin.

This is very similar to the typewriter I bought when I was about 14 years old. I wanted to be a writer even then. My handwriting looked like a drunken blue jay staggered across the page, so I had to learn to type.

The Underwood was constructed from former navy WW-II battleships, and weighed as much. The distance between each key and contact with the black ribbon was about 2 full inches! You really had to pound those keys! I mean I earned blisters on my fingertips from smacking those keys.

I used that typewriter through high school and most of my early college days. We are talking the 60’s and 70’s here, so there wasn’t much else available, at least, not in my price range.

I used this typewriter to submit my first science fiction short story to The magazine of fantasy and science Fiction. It was promptly rejected.

I no longer have that steel typewriter, but I never changed my typing style. I still pound the keys so I go through at least three keyboards a year. I smack those keys as hard as I did with the Underwood. They don’t last long.

Not to mention spilling coffee into the keys. That Underwood would take the coffee and keep on working! Not these electronic plastic things.

So, just to let my wife know, I may have to order a new one soon……
