AMGTV, 39–1 on OTA in NYC, has become the first channel I check when I turn on the TV just before eight PM. It runs a movie at that time almost every night. Since the station hasn’t been around long, I suspect its finances are tight. The info tabs are blank and their roster changes each month, which leads me to believe it rents films temporarily, same as Comet, 2–5. Last night it showed Larceny, Inc. (1942), a screwball comedy starring Edward G. Robinson and a stellar supporting cast: Jane Wyman, Broderick Crawford, Jack Carson, Anthony Quinn and a host of familiar faces whose names would be unknown to most: Edward Brophy, John Qualen, Harry Davenport, Grant Mitchell, Fortunio Bonanova and others. Also along for the ride in a small part as a goofy soda-jerk, Jackie Gleason. The story concerns three ex-cons who buy a suitcase shop hoping to break into the bank next door, but business proves so good they decide to go straight. Trouble arises when a ruthless criminal breaks out of prison and wants to rob the bank. I didn’t dwell on the holes in the script. I just enjoyed the romp, the talented actors giving their all, perhaps motivated by the desire to provide entertainment to a nation at war. At the helm was Hollywood stalwart Lloyd Bacon, who has 79 credits as an actor, 131 as a director, career spanning 1915-’53. He passed away at 65 in ’55. The flick has a rating of 7.3 on a scale of ten at IMDb. It was a refreshing break from all the westerns I’ve been watching lately. Here are Brophy & Qualen and Davenport & Bonanova. Brophy played Morelli in two of the Thin Man series. Qualen played the escaped convict in His Girl Friday (1940). Davenport was in Gone with the Wind (1939). Bonanova appeared in two episodes of The Abbott & Costello Show. All four were in a number of memorable films. I kept it simple.

To my surprise the Anti-Inflation Book Shop was doable today, despite a lack of sunshine. My thanks to the woman who bought three books in Russian, and to the 92-year-old one who purchased Turning Point by Danielle Steel; and to the young dad who donated a ton of books. Sorting through them will be one of the ways I fill time tomorrow.
