Why Positioning is About ‘Location,’ Not ‘Words’: Designing for the Cognitive Miser

In the marketing world, positioning is often misunderstood as simply “planting a strong word in the consumer’s mind.” However, this is a major oversimplification. While a “word” is the flashy result of a strategy, the true essence of positioning is exactly what the name suggests: Position. In the language of neuroscience, this “position” refers to a Schema — the pre-built mental frameworks the brain uses to interpret the world.

We must focus on a brand’s “location” because the human brain is not an explorer looking for new information. Instead, it is a “Cognitive Miser,” desperately trying to protect its existing mental maps by filtering out as much new data as possible.

The Brain Doesn’t See the World; It Rejects It

The world we perceive is not a live broadcast; it is a summary edited by the brain to save energy. Of the massive amount of data pouring in through our senses, the brain processes less than 1%. The other 99% is simply thrown away. The brain’s priority isn’t to observe the world accurately, but to successfully “ignore” anything that isn’t immediately necessary for survival.

This strategy of ignoring is powered by Predictive Coding. The brain builds internal models to “pre-code” the world. If reality matches the brain’s prediction, it handles the information automatically without even bringing it to our conscious attention. Problems arise when predictions fail. The moment a “Prediction Error” is detected, the brain pours in massive amounts of energy to perform Error Correction. To the brain, this process is an expensive “tax” on its resources, and it naturally hates paying it.

Positioning: Designing a Map to Bypass Resistance

This is where most branding fails. Many brands shout at consumers, “We offer something completely new!” This approach hits the brain’s predictive model head-on. The brain then has to pay the high cost of “Error Correction” to rewire its neural networks for this new information. As a cognitive miser, the brain would rather label the brand as “noise” and toss it into the trash than spend that energy.

Successful positioning is a clever design that bypasses this resistance. It means finding the “prime location” on the cognitive map the brain has already built — a spot within an existing Schema where there is the least friction. The most effective way to get your brand recognized and recalled is to make the brain think, “I already know this area.” This causes the brain to drop its guard and accept the information without a fight.

In fact, neuroscience research, such as the famous studies by Richard Morris, proves that when a schema already exists, the brain can bypass the slow, traditional learning path through the hippocampus. Instead, it stores new information directly into the Cortex. This creates a physical shortcut, making the brand’s message almost instant to save and recall — as if the brain already had a reserved seat waiting for it.

Location Becomes the Gravity of Your Image: The Power of Default Values

Positioning is a matter of “location” because of the unique way schemas work. Once a brand is placed within a specific schema, all the surrounding information in that category gets pulled toward the brand like gravity. The brain doesn’t just “recognize” the brand; it begins to interpret it even better than the reality. In cognitive psychology, this is known as the Default Value effect.

The famous 1981 “Office Experiment” by Brewer and Treyens clearly proves this mechanism. Researchers had participants wait in a typical office for a short time and then asked them to list the items they saw. Surprisingly, many participants claimed they saw “books” or “bookshelves,” even though there were none in the room. The “Office Schema” had such strong default values that the brain ignored the actual data and forced those missing pieces into the memory.

The same thing happens in brand positioning. For example, if a brand successfully lands in the “Professionalism” schema, the brain automatically assumes everything about that brand is professional. In fact, it starts to see the brand in an even more positive light than it actually is. Even a small mistake by the brand is explained away as “a deep, intentional move by an expert.” The brain uses its own energy to defend and even upgrade the brand’s image based on the schema’s default values.

On the other hand, if a brand is stuck in a “Cheap” or “Amateur” schema, every piece of information is distorted by that negative gravity. The brain’s obsession with fitting the world into its 1% of existing models creates a “stigma effect.” Ultimately, which schema you are linked to becomes your brand image. Designing that perfect location is the heart of positioning.

Conclusion: Become an Architect of Prime Locations

Ultimately, positioning is a game of choosing the right spot on the massive map of the consumer’s brain. The winner isn’t the copywriter who comes up with the fanciest word, but the architect who knows which “highway” (existing schema) to jump on to reach the destination without resistance.

Positioning isn’t about what you say; it’s about where you stand. If you want the brain to stop correcting you and start accepting you, you must check your brand’s location on the map right now. Because in the mind of the consumer, your position is your destiny.
