In Part 5, we’re narrowing the focus to something that everything in cybersecurity depends on: networking (Now that I’m thinking about it, I should have released this in earlier parts)

Whether you’re doing SOC work, pentesting, malware analysis, cloud security, or even just setting up labs, these abbreviations show up constantly in packet captures, firewall rules, logs, diagrams, reports, etc.

As usual, this part contains 20 networking abbreviations, explained briefly so they’re easy to read, save, and revisit.

Part 5 - Networking-Focused Cybersecurity Abbreviations

1. IP: Internet Protocol The set of rules that governs how data is addressed and routed across networks.
2. MAC: Media Access Control A unique hardware identifier assigned to network interfaces.
3. ARP: Address Resolution Protocol Maps IP addresses to MAC addresses inside a local network.
4. ICMP: Internet Control Message Protocol Used for network diagnostics and error reporting (e.g., ping).
5. DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Automatically assigns IP addresses and network settings to devices.
6. NAT: Network Address Translation Translates private IP addresses into public ones for internet access.
7. CIDR: Classless Inter-Domain Routing A method for allocating IP addresses and defining network ranges.
8. VLAN: Virtual Local Area Network Logically segments a network to improve security and traffic control.
9. ACL: Access Control List Rules that define which network traffic is allowed or denied.
10. BGP: Border Gateway Protocol The protocol that routes traffic between large networks on the Internet.
11. OSPF: Open Shortest Path First A routing protocol that determines the best path within a network.
12. RIP: Routing Information Protocol A simple routing protocol based on hop count.
13. MTU: Maximum Transmission Unit The largest packet size that can be sent over a network.
14. TTL: Time To Live Limits how long a packet can travel before being discarded.
15. SNMP: Simple Network Management Protocol Used to monitor and manage network devices.
16. NTP: Network Time Protocol Synchronizes time across networked systems.
17. ISP: Internet Service Provider The organization that provides internet connectivity.
18. QoS: Quality of Service Controls traffic priority to ensure performance for critical services.
19. LAN: Local Area Network A network that connects devices within a limited area.
20. WAN: Wide Area Network A network that spans large geographic locations.

Final Thoughts

Networking is the backbone of cybersecurity, so understanding these abbreviations helps us understand how communications happen across internal/external networks (the Internet).
