Major Life Update — Part 5

Family and Friends Reuniting

“My question throughout this journey has been, ‘Am I honoring my dad with my decisions?’ I believe that I am.”

This series was unforeseen but necessary. Although I did not start writing about this journey until I needed to brace myself for what was ahead, it still carries me through all the emotions I’ve felt from the start to the finish. It feels unreal, like a movie unfolding before me. I’ve navigated from anticipatory grief to actual grief, and now it’s time to commemorate my dad’s life with a celebration.

My dad transitioned on July 14, 2024. We braced for it, even as we hoped for a miracle. He was surrounded by love throughout this journey. It’s comforting to think that he’s now reunited with our departed loved ones, looking down on us. His granddaughter was born just months before he transitioned. I shared her photos and told him all about her, even though he could not speak.

I strived to make his journey as comfortable as possible.

Today, August 19, 2024, we commemorate my dad’s life with a celebration, followed by a BBQ, a balloon release, and cake at a nearby park.

Despite feeling overwhelmed by large gatherings, I am approaching today with an open heart. I remember joking with my dad about how he got me to visit the hospital many times and interact with many people throughout this journey.

Once he was transferred two hours away, I could only communicate via video calls until our final in-person visit on July 12, 2024. It was reminiscent of better times, though he couldn’t speak. His reactions to our voices and presence were recognized several times.

I am uncertain what awaits me today. I am preparing a Tribute Table and have written an obituary for recitation (here’s the last part of it):

Marcus’s deep love for his family and friends, combined with his vibrant spirit, will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of wisdom, warmth, and integrity continues to inspire and influence the community he cherished so deeply.

While writing my dad’s obituary, it became clear that we shared the same qualities: our wit and memorable sayings, which I have captured in his obituary.

Today, as we pay tribute to you, dad, may your presence be felt more strongly than ever, allowing us to send you off favorably while keeping your legacy and memory alive.
