The Marine Corps Training Center (Puslatpasrat) of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) recently launched a strict internal inspection program aimed at combating the rise of online gambling and illegal lending practices among its personnel. The initiative sends a clear message: digital misconduct will not be tolerated within the armed forces.

Surprise Inspections at Ground Zero

On March 6, 2025, Puslatpasrat conducted a surprise inspection of all personnel smartphones during a morning assembly in Gunungsari, Surabaya. Led by First Lieutenant Mar Budiono and the Cakra Batara 25 Task Force, the inspection involved checking mobile devices, installed applications, and even requesting access PINs to identify potential involvement in online gambling or unauthorized digital loans.

This inspection wasn’t a one-off event. According to Budiono, routine and intensified inspections will continue, forming a key part of the unit’s preventative strategy. By being proactive, TNI AL aims to safeguard its ranks from the far-reaching consequences of digital misconduct.

A Top-Down Directive with Zero Tolerance

The initiative stems from a direct mandate issued by the Commander of the Marine Corps, who also serves as Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). Major Marine Nurdin, Commander of Puslatpasrat, emphasized that no personnel will be exempt from accountability.

“As trainers, we should set the example — through our words, conduct, and integrity,” he said, underscoring that Puslatpasrat’s members are expected to model the highest standards of discipline across the Navy.

He added that beyond preserving institutional honor, the inspections aim to protect individuals from the legal, financial, and ethical repercussions of gambling — a behavior that could derail both careers and personal lives.

Online gambling has emerged as a modern vice, facilitated by easy access to smartphones and the internet. Within the military, its consequences are especially severe:
