My Neighbor Kept Waking Me Up at 3 AM

After two polite conversations, three sleepless nights, and one noise complaint, I learned that being reasonable doesn’t always mean people will see you that way.

My upstairs neighbor is in a band. A real, actual band with practices, gigs, aspirations, and the whole thing. And I think that’s cool. Music is important. Artistic expression is important. I have a Spotify playlist called “late night vibes” and everything.

The only complication is that he’s a drummer, and he practices in the apartment directly above mine.

Now look. I made peace with this early on. Daytime drumming is totally fine. I work from home some days and yeah, it’s a bit like having a construction site upstairs, but that’s apartment living. You sign the lease, you accept the social contract, you buy noise-canceling headphones and move on. I bought a really good pair. I became, if anything, a better headphone-owner because of this man.

We were fine. He drummed, I coped, life continued. I honestly barely thought about it.

And then one night, I woke up at 2 AM to the sound of what I can only describe as someone teaching a robot to feel emotions through percussion.

Boom. Ba-da-boom. CRASH. Boom boom.

I lay there for a second, genuinely confused. Was this a dream? Was this a gas leak hallucination? No. It was real. It was 2 AM. And it was drums.

I did the reasonable thing. The mature, adult, neighborly thing. I put on shoes, walked upstairs, knocked on his door, and very politely asked him to please stop because it was 2 in the morning and I have a 6 AM alarm.

He was apologetic. Genuinely, it seemed. “Oh, I’m so sorry, I totally lost track of time.” He looked a little sheepish. I went back to bed feeling like a functioning member of society. Problem solved. We’re adults. We communicated. Beautiful.

That was Incident One.

Incident Two happened maybe ten days later. This time it was closer to 3 AM, and I was in that beautiful, deep, non-REM sleep that scientists say is when your brain actually repairs itself. I know this because I have anxiety and I’ve read too many articles about sleep.

I did not knock on his door this time. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I was trying to be less of an inconvenience. Like, maybe showing up at his door twice feels aggressive? Maybe a text is softer? More casual? I’m thinking about his comfort while he is literally drumming at 3 AM.

I texted him:

“Hey, I can hear the drums pretty loudly, would you be able to wrap up? Have an early morning.”

He replied:

“Sorry, lost track of time.”

The exact same sentence. Word for word. Which is either a coincidence or this man has a “neighbor complaint” text template.

I went back to sleep. I thought: okay, this is a pattern. He gets into it and loses track of time. He’s a musician. This happens. I’ll talk to him properly soon, maybe set some kind of actual understanding about hours. I was genuinely planning to have a Mature Conversation About Expectations.

That was Incident Two.

Incident Three: 3:15 AM on a Thursday.

I want you to sit with that for a second. Three-fifteen. In the morning. On a Thursday. I have to be conscious and professionally functional in less than three hours. I have a meeting at 9 AM where I need to use my brain.

The drums started.

My first instinct was still to text him. I picked up my phone, I started typing, and then I stopped. Because I realized I have already knocked on his door. I have already sent the polite text. This is the third time. And if I send another text that gets another “sorry, lost track of time” while I sit here awake at 3 AM for the third time this month… I’m just going to feel insane.

So I called the non-emergency line.

I want to emphasize: non-emergency. I did not call 911. I did not report a crime. I filed a noise complaint, which is a completely normal, boring, municipal thing that exists specifically for situations like this. The city literally has a process for this. I used the process.

The officers came. They spoke to him. He stopped. I went back to sleep.

And then the next day, my neighbor decided I had declared war on him.

Apparently, I should have “just knocked again.”

That’s the argument. That my escalation from knocking to texting to calling a non-emergency line after the third identical incident was unreasonable. That I skipped steps. That I went “nuclear.”

He used the word nuclear. For a noise complaint. For cops who came, said “hey, keep it down,” and left. Nobody got arrested and nobody got fined (as far as I know). The entire interaction was probably five minutes.

He has since been telling our neighbors that I’m unreasonable.

I’ve been doing a lot of introspection about this, mostly at 6 AM when I’m exhausted because I’ve been woken up in the middle of the night three times this month by drums.

I don’t think I was wrong. But I also understand why he’s upset.

He’s embarrassed. Having cops show up at your door is embarrassing, even when you haven’t done anything actually serious. It escalated socially in a way that knocking doesn’t. Knocking is private. A cop is a third party, a record, a story. I get why that stings more.

But also (and I cannot stress this enough) I knocked. I texted. Both times, he apologized and did it again. What was the next reasonable step? Was I supposed to knock a third time and just hope this time was different? Was I supposed to accept that this is simply my life now, that once a week I get woken up at 3 AM and I text a man “hey lol drums” and he says “sry lost track” and we do that forever until one of us moves?

At some point, when two people can’t resolve something directly, you involve a neutral third party. That’s not nuclear. That’s just the next step. It’s what all the conflict resolution stuff says to do.

I was considerate. I was patient. I let the first one go with a polite conversation. I soft-pedaled the second one with a text instead of a knock because I didn’t want to seem like I was escalating. I was, genuinely, trying to be a good neighbor.

And still I ended up as the villain in a story being circulated to people I have to share a building with.

There’s something uniquely demoralizing about trying to handle something reasonably and then being told, anyway, that you handled it wrong. It makes you feel like the rules of conflict were never the actual rules. Like there’s a different game happening and you only find out you’ve been playing it incorrectly after you’ve already lost.

I haven’t talked to him directly since. The hallway is now a thing of tension and pointed eye contact. I smile. He does a tight-lipped nod that communicates a full paragraph of feelings.

I’m not sure what happens next. Maybe he cools off and we have an actual conversation. Maybe he keeps telling people I’m unreasonable and I become The Neighbor Who Called The Cops and I just have to live with that reputation. Maybe he starts drumming at 2 AM again and I have a whole new problem.

What I know is this: I have to wake up at 6 AM. I work hard. I need sleep. I tried twice, nicely, before I involved anyone else. I’m not going to feel guilty about that, even if it’s more comfortable for everyone if I do.

Also, I’ve started keeping a small log of dates and times. Just in case.

Not because I’m unreasonable.

Because I’ve learned that if you’re ever going to have to defend the fact that you simply wanted to sleep, you’re going to want receipts.
