The Setup Rheinmetall is down approximately 41% from its October 3rd 2025 all-time high of €2,008. Its decline stems from three consecutive earnings misses. Management flagged delayed revenue resulting from a strategic inventory buildup, with goods ready for shipment but not recognised as revenue as delivery was delayed to Q2. Last earnings call EPS came in at €2.18, an 18% miss off the projected €2.66. Yet revenue came up 8% year over year to €1.938 billion. The backlog increased by 31% to €73 billion.
The Business Rheinmetall is an arms manufacturer founded in 1889, headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, operations in over 30 countries, €9.9 billion in sales, and €1.22 billion in operating free cash flow. They develop and manufacture vehicle systems, weapons and ammunition, air defence, digital systems, and naval systems. The company continues to secure new contracts, their most recent being a $107.5 million five-year agreement between Rheinmetall America and the US Army to supply them with M1 Abrams tank tracks. Rheinmetall also emerged as one of two finalists for the US Army XM30 infantry vehicle program, adding to a €73 billion order backlog.
Analyst Consensus With 21 analysts covering Rheinmetall, the average 12-month price target sits at €1,889, with a low of €1,408 and a high of €2,500. Goldman Sachs added Rheinmetall to their conviction list with a Buy rating with a €2,300 price target. JPMorgan downgraded Rheinmetall from Overweight to Neutral, slashing the price target from €2,130 to €1,500 following the Q1 miss, citing concerns with the company’s execution and product portfolio.
The Thesis Regardless of whether the Iran War or Ukraine War ends, European nations are bound by the 2025 Hague Summit commitment to reach 5% of GDP on defence by 2035. European NATO members raised defence spending by 20% in 2025 alone. Rheinmetall is the primary European beneficiary and has gained a €73 billion order backlog. Since the Q1 miss, insider buying accelerated. CEO Armin Papperger purchased €500k worth of shares at €1,405. COO René Gansauge bought approximately €246,228 in a series of purchases. Zero insider sells in 90 days against a 27% decline. Rheinmetall targets €50bn in revenue and operating margins above 20% by 2030. They plan on growing their employees from 40,000 to 70,000 and building 13 new factories.
The Risks If Rheinmetall fails to beat Q2 expectations on August 6th, the timing excuse will expire and another selloff will occur. Second, a €73 billion backlog is only valuable if production can scale fast enough to convert those orders into revenue. Rheinmetall has many competitors in Europe, including BAE Systems and Thales, one of which could overtake Rheinmetall in market share. Rheinmetall is heavily exposed to ground systems. This could potentially be exploited by one of their competitors. The uncertainty that Rheinmetall can secure its 2030 goals allows for this current discount valuation.
Conclusion I rate Rheinmetall is a Buy. Its €73 billion backlog, insider buying showing executives have confidence that the stock value will go higher, and plans for massive expansion with targets set for 2030 counter the market’s pullback. If they miss on the August 6th earnings, the bull case for Rheinmetall significantly weakens.
