Study Finds 61 Gigatons of Ice Lost in Svalbard During 2024’s Record Heatwave

The summer of 2024 marked a turning point for the Arctic. Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago near the North Pole, witnessed an unprecedented heatwave that caused record glacier loss. In just six weeks, nearly 1% of its total ice mass disappeared, equal to 61.7 gigatons — an amount comparable to Greenland’s seasonal loss despite Svalbard being fifty times smaller.

This massive melt is more than a regional event. It contributes directly to global sea-level rise, disrupts marine ecosystems, and signals the growing urgency of climate action. Scientists warn that such summers, once thought distant, could become the norm by 2100, even under reduced emissions scenarios.

Svalbard’s meltdown is a wake-up call — what we saw in 2024 may soon be routine, reshaping coastlines and challenging communities far beyond the Arctic.
