I Thought Task Bar Hero Was Eating My Chests. I Was Mostly Wrong.

I blamed the game for every missing chest. It was usually a cooldown, a sync, or plain bad luck.

Chasing missing chests starts with understanding how the system actually works.

Let me just put the pain on the table, because if you’re here you already know it.

You farmed a boss nine times. No chest. You check the mailbox. Nothing. You force-quit, relaunch, pray. Still nothing. That’s the exact moment most of us decide the game is broken and we’re being robbed. I know because I’ve been there, and I’ve watched the same three posts scroll past from about a hundred other people.

Sometimes that’s the real answer — an actual bug. But once I stopped being mad and started actually tracking my drops instead of guessing, I found something more useful: a missing chest usually isn’t one problem. It’s four different things stacked on top of each other, and they all look identical from the outside.

The four usual suspects:

  1. An actual bug. It exists. It’s rarer than you think.
  2. The chest cooldown. The real reason most “missing” chests never happened in the first place.
  3. Steam inventory / server sync. You already got the chest. You just can’t see it yet.
  4. The drop rate being a roll, not a guarantee.

Everything below is my own observation from playing this game and reading what the community has reverse-engineered. None of it is official. Take it with salt. But take it — because it’s the only way this system stops feeling like a scam.

The cooldown is the big one, and almost nobody explains it

Here’s the mental model most of us start with: kill boss → chest falls. Every boss, like a slot machine that’s always a winner.

It isn’t.

Current evidence strongly suggests the game uses an internal cooldown for chest drops rather than awarding one after every boss kill. While that cooldown is active, defeating additional bosses doesn’t appear to generate another eligible drop. The exact values have changed across updates, so it’s better to think of the mechanic than to memorize specific numbers.

What the community has worked out — and these have been adjusted between versions, so don’t treat them as gospel:

  • Common Chest: roughly a 4–5 minute cooldown
  • Blue Stage Boss Chest: roughly a 6–7 minute cooldown

That second one changed more than once across updates. I wouldn’t be surprised if it changes again. The point isn’t the exact seconds. It’s the shape of the mechanic.

The real flow is: cooldown ends → the game rolls once → success means a chest, failure means you wait for the next boss to come around. Kill three bosses inside the cooldown window? Congratulations, you’ve killed three bosses. No chests owed to you.

Honestly, once I understood this, half my “the game is broken” moments just evaporated. The other half took a while longer.

Boss kills alone don’t guarantee a chest.

Boss kills alone don’t guarantee a chest.

The drop rate is a roll after the cooldown, not a guarantee

A lot of people read “Chest Drop Rate” and assume it means when the cooldown ends, I’ll definitely get a chest.

It doesn’t.

The actual chain: cooldown ends → chance roll → outcome. And here’s the part nobody wants to hear: even after the cooldown, success is not guaranteed. Say your base drop rate is 15%, and you’ve stacked whatever multipliers push it up by 300%. That gets you to roughly 45%.

Which means there’s still a 55% chance you fail. Every single roll.

Go two or three bosses past the cooldown with no blue chest? That’s not a bug. That’s probability doing exactly what it says on the tin. I had a stretch once where I went five bosses dry and I was certain something was broken. It wasn’t. The numbers just did numbers.

So why does drop rate even matter?

If the cooldown is the wall and the roll is the gate, then drop rate doesn’t shorten the wall at all. What it does is improve your odds of passing through the gate on the first boss after the cooldown clears.

Think about the failure loop: cooldown ends → boss → fail → another boss → fail → another boss → and now the cooldown has probably re-triggered because your boss speed outpaced it. You’ve burned time with nothing to show, and your chests-per-hour tanks.

Drop rate is the lever that pushes the first attempt after cooldown from “probably fail” toward “probably succeed.” It doesn’t make more chests spawn. It makes the ones you’re allowed to get actually happen. That’s still worth stacking. It’s just not a magic switch.

The hoarding trick is dead. Let it go.

For a while there was a theory floating around: don’t open your common chests, let them pile up, and the blue chests will drop more often. I tried it. I sat on a fat stack of common chests like a dragon and waited.

It doesn’t work anymore. Whatever that behavior was — and I’m honestly not sure it ever worked reliably — the devs seem to have closed it off. The advice everyone testing this has landed on is simple: keep Auto Open on, or just open chests as you get them. There’s no hidden benefit to sitting on a pile, and as I’ll get to in a second, sitting on a pile might actually be hurting you.

Why the system works this way in the first place

One thing that helped this whole system make more sense to me was learning why it changed.

Early after launch, huge numbers of players were farming continuously, and every chest meant another Steam Inventory request. That quickly became a bottleneck. Over several updates, the developers reduced the pressure by introducing delayed delivery, inventory queues, and other backend changes instead of immediately granting every chest the moment it dropped.

That doesn’t make missing chests any less frustrating, but it does explain why the system sometimes feels slower than players expect.

Sometimes you got the chest. You just can’t see it yet.

This one tripped me up more than any bug, because it looks exactly like “nothing dropped.”

The game added a chest acquisition queue to keep the servers from buckling under everyone’s inventory requests. What that means in practice: when you earn a chest, it doesn’t always show up immediately. The server holds a few, then delivers them in a batch.

So a short stretch with zero visible chests doesn’t necessarily mean nothing dropped. Some rewards may simply be waiting in the queue and arrive together later through your mailbox. I’ve had exactly that happen — nothing for a while, then a mailbox that looked like Christmas morning.

If you suspect a backlog, the fix is dull but real: refresh the mailbox, claim, open, and repeat. The devs have said that with a big backlog you may need to run that loop several times before everything actually displays.

Some rewards may arrive later through the mailbox queue.

Some rewards may arrive later through the mailbox queue.

The Steam inventory rabbit hole

This is the category that explains most of the “I definitely dropped a chest and it’s gone” posts.

The chest dropped. The game doesn’t show it. The mailbox doesn’t show it. But it’s sitting in your Steam inventory, or waiting to sync. The game and Steam got out of step, and you’re staring at the gap.

The devs added a tool for exactly this: Settings → Others → Steam Inventory Issue Resolved. It forces a resync. Combined with the mailbox loop above, the recovery path most people have had success with looks like:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Others
  3. Run Steam Inventory Issue Resolved
  4. Refresh the mailbox
  5. Claim whatever’s there
  6. Open everything
  7. Restart the game
  8. Repeat until the backlog is gone

That sequence has consistently resolved the issue for many players, and it’s worth trying before assuming the rewards are gone.

The Steam inventory resync option can resolve delayed chest rewards.

The Steam inventory resync option can resolve delayed chest rewards.

Don’t hoard. Seriously.

Counter-intuitive, given the cooldowns, but the evidence keeps pointing the same way: the more chests you let pile up in your inventory, the more likely the sync goes sideways. Bigger backlog, more requests, more chances for Steam and the game to disagree about what you own.

Open your chests as you get them. Keep the inventory empty. It’s not exciting advice, but it’s the advice that actually reduces the “missing chest” problem.

And that “Chest Deleted” message? Mostly a panic for nothing.

There was a stretch where people would see Chest Dropped followed by Chest Deleted and lose their minds. I did too, the first time. Looked like the game was grabbing my loot and throwing it in the garbage.

As far as the community has been able to tell, in most cases that’s a display bug caused by a failed server sync. The chest wasn’t dropped-then-deleted. It was earned, and the confirmation got garbled somewhere between the server and your screen. Annoying. Not theft.

The thing that actually drives your chest-per-hour

After all this, I stopped obsessing over the drop rate stat and started paying attention to the real bottleneck.

Farming significantly faster than the cooldown doesn’t necessarily translate into proportionally more chests, because eligible drop opportunities are still gated by the cooldown window.

Chest-per-hour comes from the whole loop, not one number:

  • How fast you clear a stage
  • How fast you kill the boss
  • Whether your run timing lines up with the chest cooldown
  • How many bosses you fit into an hour
  • And only then, the drop chance on top

The math that matters: if your full run takes about as long as the chest cooldown, you’re basically rolling as often as the game allows. That combination — cooldown coverage plus a decent drop rate — beats stacking drop rate alone every single time. I’m pretty sure I spent longer than I’d like to admit optimizing the wrong stat and leaving chests on the table.

One honest caveat

None of this means the chest system is flawless. New updates keep producing new reports — blue chests going cold, common chests stopping entirely, drop rates feeling weird after a patch, boss chest counts dropping off. I’ve filed my share of “this is definitely broken” moments.

But almost every time I’ve dug into one, it turned out to be a cooldown adjustment, a bad luck streak, or a sync issue. A few versions did have real bugs, and those got hotfixed. The point isn’t that the game never breaks. The point is that “no chest right now” is a terrible way to tell whether it’s broken.

Anyway. Before you file the report or rage quit, run the boring checklist once: cooldown, sync, mailbox refresh, restart, repeat. It’s not dramatic, but it costs five minutes, and it’s how I stopped seeing ghosts everywhere. Most of my “lost” chests were never lost — they were on a timer, or sitting in a queue, or hiding behind a sync I hadn’t bothered to run.
