“What is it?” she asked, her eyes searching mine, bright with a curiosity that hadn’t yet learned to fear.

“Dunno.”

“Something, like when you get cut, and then you get a scab.”

“A bit like that,” I murmured, watching her mind piece it together.

“So you have a scab inside you?” she asked, leaning in a little closer, her small face dead serious.

“Yeah. I guess.”

“So if I kiss it, will it go away?”

“Oh, good idea. Thank you,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat as she pressed a soft, warm kiss against my breast.

“It’ll go away now,” she announced with the absolute certainty of an eight-year-old.

“Hope so.”

“Scabs heal on their own.”

“Yes, they do. Most of them.”

“Why? What happens to the others?”

“I think they… they crust up and stay hard?”

“Like The Hogwarts Shield?”

“A bit like that, yeah,” I said.

“Does it protect the soft parts?”

“It does. It keeps everything safe inside while the castle fixes itself.”

“Is Voldemort trying to get in?”

“No dark lords. Just a tricky puzzle that needs figuring out.”

“Does it hurt? The scab?”

“Not right now,” I said. “But it’s confusing. I’m still trying to figure out how it got there.”

“Did you fall down?”

“No, not this time. It just happened on its own.”

“Hmmm. . .”

“The doctors are trying to figure it out, too.”

She frowned, chewing on her lower lip as she considered the weight of the castle.

“Are they going to cast a spell?”

“A very quiet, patient kind of magic,” I told her. “The kind that takes a long time to work.”

“Like a million days?”

“Maybe not a million,” I smiled, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “But we have to be patient. We have to watch the shield and see what it does.”

She looked down at her own knee, then back up at me.

“We can watch it together.”

“I would really like that,” I said. “We can both figure it out as we go.”
