Italian Delight: Como & Milan (Day 1)

This was my first trip with the Uniflucht travel agency and was looking forward to it. My journey begins in Munich for the Easter long weekend. The first stop was the city of Como with its picturesque lake. We had around 2hours to spend before we headed to Milan.

Note: As you will be crossing through Swiss to reach Como, please don’t forget to switch off the data as Swiss doesn’t fall under the Roaming rule. Walked along the lake enjoying the views and took a glimpse of the Volta museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta which houses the first battery.

After roaming the city and having breakfast, it was time to head for Milan.

Thanks to the drivers, we were able to avoid the heavy Easter break traffic on the autobahn and reached Milan around 1:00 in the afternoon. The trip guides make sure that the bus is either parked in the city centre or near a tourist attraction for easy accessibility. The first attraction was Sforza or Sforzesca castle also known as Castello. A medieval fortification converted into a museum housing several art collections, including works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raffaello. I walked around the fort walls exploring the magnificent structure.

Since we reached in the afternoon, there was already a big queue to visit the museums, so skipped the museums and headed to Milan’s most visited attraction- Duomo di Milano.

The gothic church with pinnacles and spires almost resembles the Cologne cathedral. It took a massive 600 years to finish the cathedral to what we see today. Duomo has a rooftop which is open to the public and the last access is at 16:00. I was not aware of this and was only able to visit the cathedral and get a tour of its interiors.

Once, you come out of the Duomo, on the left side you can notice a heavy rush of people walking into a dome-shaped building. It is none other than one of the world’s oldest shopping galleries housing all the luxury fashion boutiques, restaurants and gelatos.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a historic shopping mall that stands out with its glass-domed roof and elegant marble floor. After having a pizza in Milan, I still had 3 hours left before the bus would take us to our hotel in Bologna. I decided to travel to San Siro also known as Guiseppe Meazza stadium, a football stadium home to Milan’s two big clubs- AC Milan and Inter Milan. It is still surprising how the two rival clubs share the same stadium all these years. The San Siro pillars are recognized by all football fans.

Ended the day having some gelatos and the bus was ready to take us to the hotel in Bologna. See you on Day 2.
