Why Internal Linking Is the Most Ignored SEO Strategy (And How to Actually Fix It)

If you asked most website owners to list their top SEO priorities, you’d hear: backlinks, content, page speed, keyword research. Internal linking would come up maybe fourth or fifth, if at all. Some people wouldn’t mention it. That’s a real mistake, and I’ve watched it hold back genuinely good sites from rankings they should have had months ago.
Internal links are how Google discovers pages, understands site structure, and distributes ranking authority across a domain. Getting them right costs nothing except attention, which might be exactly why they’re so consistently overlooked.
The problem with how most sites handles internal links
Most sites do internal linking accidentally. A writer finishes a post, adds a “you might also like” widget at the bottom, and considers it done. The links that exist are random, based on what happened to appear in a CMS sidebar or what the writer remembered in the moment, not based on any strategic logic about what pages need authority or how topics relate to each other.
The result is a site where some pages are heavily linked (usually the homepage and a few popular old posts) and many pages are essentially orphaned, technically live, but barely connected to anything. Google visits them irregularly, ranks them poorly, and eventually deprioritizes them in crawling.
How to approach internal linking with actual intention
Start with a simple audit. List your most important pages, the ones you most want to rank. Then check how many internal links they receive from other pages on the site. You’ll often discover that your highest-priority commercial pages have fewer internal links than an old blog post that got shared once three years ago.
From there, the fix is methodical. When you publish new content, deliberately link to two or three existing pages that are genuinely relevant. When updating old content, look for opportunities to link to newer pages. Over time, this builds a coherent web of connections that reflects your site’s actual topical structure.
Development teams like Mittal Technologies often integrate internal link audits into site architecture work because how a site is technically structured and how its content is linked are two sides of the same problem. You can’t solve one without thinking about the other.
Anchor text: the detail that actually matters
The text you use for internal links signals topic relevance to Google. “Click here” is wasted. “Learn more” is wasted. “Email marketing automation tips” as anchor text, linking to your guide on email automation, that’s doing real work. It tells Google what the destination page is about, in a way that’s also readable and natural for users.
Natural variation is fine. You don’t have to repeat the same phrase robotically. But there should be some intention behind the words you choose, especially for links pointing to your most important pages.
The orphaned pages problem
Run a crawl of your site, Screaming Frog handles smaller sites on its free plan and filter for pages with zero or one internal link. What you find will probably be uncomfortable. Hundreds of pages, potentially, that exist in isolation. Google may have technically indexed them, but they’re not connected to anything that would help them rank.
Fixing this isn’t exciting work. It’s not the kind of win you can put in a launch announcement. But consistently over a few months, a well-linked site outperforms a poorly linked one, even when content quality is similar. Link structure is infrastructure. It doesn’t get the credit it deserves, but it shows up in the numbers.
