“I Went Back to Ella but I Didn’t Find Her.”
I visited Ella last week after several years. What once was a sleepy mountain town has transformed completely. Where before I’d see only a few adventurous backpackers, now the streets are filled with European tourists. The change is astonishing — espresso bars stand where simple tea shops once were, and the aroma of Sri Lankan curry competes with the smell of avocado toast.
Ella’s main attractions now draw international crowds:
- Ella Rock — The famous 4-hour hike offering panoramic views

- Nine Arches Bridge — The colonial-era railway bridge surrounded by lush greenery

- Little Adam’s Peak — The easier hike with spectacular sunrise views

- Ravana Falls — The dramatic waterfall linked to the Ramayana legend

- Demodara Loop — The engineering marvel where the train track loops around itself

The tea plantations that once defined the area now share space with trendy cafés boasting “instagrammable” views. Local shops that sold spices and sarongs now offer yoga retreats and adventure tours. While part of me misses the old, quiet Ella, there’s no denying its new energy. The mountains remain as beautiful as ever — they’re just surrounded by more cameras now.
