Most of us are trying to run our bodies on a tiny bit of energy when we actually need a giant power source. We eat a quick snack and think we’re fine, but the math shows we are barely giving our hearts and muscles the “spark” they need to keep going.

The Hidden Potassium Deficiency

Some studies show that less than 0.01% of Americans get enough potassium through their daily diet. Why is this gap so large?

Processed Foods: People prioritise fast and processed foods, as opposed to home-cooked food, which is healthier and more nutritious. Fast food often contains high amounts of sodium and has a low potassium content, which leads to an imbalance of these two minerals. Excess sodium in the blood leads to increased blood pressure.

Diet Choices: Diets can also be the cause of insufficient potassium intake in the body. Some diets do not include enough fruits and vegetables.

Cooking methods: A possible cause of low potassium levels in food, boiling vegetables can leach potassium into the cooking water, which is then discarded.

Lifestyle Burnout: Alcohol, smoking, and high levels of stress actively deplete the potassium level in the body.

Electricity in the body: The Sodium-Potassium Pump

Potassium is an electrolyte. It helps the body generate electrical impulses. Without it, our hearts would not beat, and our muscles would not be able to move.

The most interesting fact is that almost 20–40% of all the energy spent while sitting goes to the sodium-potassium pump. Sodium is expelled, and potassium is taken in. This pump functions like a battery. Without potassium, your internal batteries are simply discharged.

It’s slightly radioactive- but safe!

A small part of natural potassium is radioactive. This means that bananas are technically radioactive. There is also a unit of measurement, BED “Banana Equivalent Dose“; how much radiation is received from a banana. But you have to eat 10 million bananas at once for it to be dangerous!

Why Our Body Needs Potassium

Potassium is one of the seven essential macrominerals that should be consumed daily in high amounts. Foods rich in potassium are extremely important for people with hypertension, because potassium has the opposite effect of sodium when it comes to blood pressure. Potassium controls and balances the effects of sodium.

It reduces blood pressure and, thus, the load on the walls of blood vessels. It also helps balance the fluids and minerals that pass in and out of cells.

Potassium is a mineral that helps the body get rid of excess sodium, thus helping the kidneys work.

Simply put, the effect of potassium on blood pressure is due to its effect on sodium levels, and also on kidney function. Potassium helps the body get rid of excess sodium that is ingested through the diet. The more potassium we consume, the more easily the body will get rid of excess sodium through urine.

A Mineral for Your Whole Body

This mineral reduces the risk of health problems with the heart, kidneys and brain. It is also needed for the function and contraction of muscles, along with sodium.

Sugar storage: Potassium is needed by athletes and those who move a lot, because energy needs to be stored in the muscles. For every gram of glycogen (energy from sugar) stored in the muscles, 20 mg of potassium is needed. If potassium is lacking, the muscles tire quickly.

Potassium and brain fog: When potassium is lacking in the body, blood flow to the brain can be lower. This phenomenon causes a feeling of confusion or brain fog. Enough potassium means better conduction of nerve signals.

The Power Team: Vitamin D, Calcium and Potassium

Potassium doesn’t work alone. It is a part of a delicate “Power Team“. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. But if there is too much acidity in the body or a high salt intake, the body starts to excrete calcium through the urine. Potassium neutralises acidity to keep the calcium in our bones. Vitamin D takes in calcium, and potassium keeps it from being flushed out.

Kidney protection. When high doses of vitamin D are taken, the calcium level in the blood increases. If not directed correctly, it can cause kidney stones. So, potassium helps prevent calcium from depositing in the kidneys.

Magnesium is also needed here to activate vitamin D. Taken together, it helps the body better utilise calcium for strong bones, while also protecting muscles and kidneys.

How to get your Daily 4700 mg

The recommended daily allowance of potassium is 4,700 mg or 4.7 g. Most health organisations recommend obtaining potassium through the daily diet as both a preventive and therapeutic tool for elevated blood pressure.

To address this deficiency, we can start by consuming foods rich in potassium, such as sweet potatoes (with skin), green leafy vegetables, and bananas. A variety of fruits and vegetables, legumes, and nuts also provide adequate potassium intake. Reducing your intake of fast food, alcohol, and cigarettes, as well as managing your stress levels, can also support healthy potassium levels in the body.

Bananas are not kings!

Everyone thinks that bananas are the richest in potassium, but potatoes with skin, spinach and avocados contain more potassium than bananas! One medium-sized banana contains about 400 mg of potassium.

Other foods that contain potassium:

  • Spinach contains potassium, calcium and antioxidants.
  • Chia, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds are rich in potassium, magnesium and fibre.
  • Legumes are rich in fibre, magnesium, protein and potassium.
  • Tomatoes are also rich in potassium, but also in lycopene, an antioxidant pigment with a positive effect on heart health.

A Note on Supplements

A person cannot overdose on potassium from food (fruits, vegetables, legumes). However, with supplements, we should be careful. A rapid jump in potassium in the blood can confuse the heart’s rhythm. Therefore, it is always better to get our charge from a plate, not from a box.
