How to Pick a Writing Niche Without Wasting 6 Months

Most new writers spend months writing about everything. Personal growth one day. Productivity the next. Then travel. Then finance. Then they wonder why nothing sticks.

I did the same thing.

The problem is not that you wrote about too many topics. The problem is you never made a decision. You kept waiting for the “right” niche to reveal itself.

It does not work that way.

Here is the 3-step framework I wish someone had given me early on.

Step 1: List what you already know

Not what you want to learn. Not what sounds smart. What you already know.

Think about your job, your past mistakes, your hobbies, things people ask you about, problems you have already solved.

Write them all down without judging. You are not picking yet. You are just listing.

If you have worked in sales for three years, you know sales. If you have been managing a tight budget since college, you know personal finance on a real level. If you have lost 10 kg and kept it off, you know something about fitness that most fitness writers do not.

Your experience is your material. Start there.

Step 2: Cross it with what people actually search for

Having knowledge is not enough. You need to write about things people want to read.

Take your list from Step 1. For each item, ask: do people Google this? Do they go on Reddit and ask about it? Do they watch YouTube videos about it?

If yes, there is an audience.

You are looking for the overlap between what you know and what people need. That overlap is your niche.

This does not have to be complicated. Type your topic into Medium’s search bar. See how many articles come up. See if writers in that space are getting responses. That tells you if there is a real audience or just a topic that sounds good in theory.

Step 3: Write 10 articles before you decide

This is the part most people skip.

You cannot know if a niche fits you until you have actually written in it. Reading about a topic and writing about it are very different things. Some topics you love to consume but hate to write. Others feel easy and natural the moment you start.

Pick the best option from Step 2. Write 10 articles. Not 2. Not 5. Ten.

After 10 articles, you will know three things. Whether you have more to say. Whether people are responding. Whether you look forward to writing in that space or you are forcing it.

If all three feel good, you have your niche. If not, you move to the next option on your list. But now you are making a decision based on real evidence, not a guess.

Why 6 months get wasted

Most writers waste time because they treat picking a niche like a permanent life decision. It is not. It is just a starting point.

The writers who figure it out fast are not the ones who thought harder. They are the ones who decided faster and adjusted based on what they learned.

Pick something reasonable. Write consistently. Pay attention to what works. Adjust.

That is the whole framework.
