What Is the US Army RSP? A Complete Guide to the Recruit Sustainment Program (Red, White, Blue Phase)

US Army RSP
What Is the US Army RSP (Recruit Sustainment Program)?
After signing a contract to join the US Army, military service does not begin immediately. Soldier candidates participate in a special preparation program until their ship date, meaning the date they depart for Basic Combat Training (BCT). The name of this program is RSP, Recruit Sustainment Program.
RSP is a mandatory preparation program held once a month over one weekend, two consecutive days. This program is usually organized at a US Army base, and its purpose is to prepare candidates physically, mentally, and in terms of discipline for basic training.

RSP Drill
Purpose of RSP
The main objectives of the RSP program are:
- To teach Army discipline and rules
- To develop drill and ceremony skills
- To improve physical fitness level
- To prepare for the US Army Physical Fitness Test, currently the ACFT, Army Combat Fitness Test
- To provide an initial introduction to the lessons that will be encountered during Basic Training
- To instill teamwork and military culture
At this stage, the Army clearly explains what it expects from you and also outlines the opportunities it offers, including career, education, discipline, and development prospects.
The 3 Phases of RSP
The RSP program consists of three main phases: Red Phase, White Phase, and Blue Phase.
Red Phase

Red Phase
Red Phase usually begins on the first weekend. This phase is the introduction and basic orientation stage.
During this phase:
- Army rules and expectations are explained
- The fundamentals of military discipline are taught
- Formation and the concept of command are introduced
- Physical condition is initially assessed
- General information about what Army life will be like is provided
The main purpose of the Red Phase is to help the candidate adapt to the system and prepare psychologically for the military environment.
White Phase

White Phase
White Phase begins after the Red Phase and continues until approximately one month before the ship date.
During this phase, preparation becomes more serious and systematic.
During the White Phase:
- PT (Physical Training) exercises become more intensive
- Preparation and practice tests for the ACFT are conducted
- Some lessons that will be covered in Basic Training are taught in advance
- Military basics are instructed
- Drill training is brought to a more professional level
- Team games and teamwork activities are carried out
White Phase is one of the most physically and mentally active stages. The goal is to prepare the candidate to transition into Basic Training with minimal shock.
Blue Phase

Blue Phase
Blue Phase is the final stage and takes place close to the ship date.
During this phase, physical intensity is reduced compared to the previous stage, and the focus shifts more toward informational and administrative preparation.
During Blue Phase:
- The ship date process is explained in detail
- What to expect at Basic Training is discussed
- Documentation and procedures are completed
- Final physical checks may be conducted
- Psychological preparation and motivation are emphasized
The purpose of this phase is to ensure the candidate is fully prepared both mentally and administratively for Basic Training.

Why Is the RSP Program Important?
RSP makes the transition to Basic Combat Training easier. Compared to candidates who go directly to basic training, those who complete RSP:
- Are more disciplined
- Are physically better prepared
- Understand Army terminology
- Are adapted to the command structure
- Are more resilient to stress
In essence, this program serves as a soft transition into military life.
