Potholes are a constant issue in many Chicago neighborhoods, especially after harsh winter months. The repeated freezing and thawing due to winter weather conditions cause cracks in the pavement, which eventually break down and form potholes. These street holes make driving rough, damaging vehicles, and pose risks to cyclists and pedestrians as well.

This map shows the most recent pothole complaints and fixes in the Chicagoland area.

Many residents express frustration with how long it takes to get repairs in Chicago. In some neighborhoods, potholes remain untouched for weeks, unreported holes create daily problems. While the city has crews that work on repairs and offers a 311-reporting system, the number of potholes can be overwhelming. Some streets are patched repeatedly, with repairs that don’t last very long.

Communities on the South and West Sides often see slower responses and fewer long-term fixes. This has raised concerns about how city resources are distributed and whether all neighborhoods are treated equally. All residents of Chicago must demand more from elected officials in maintaining our infrastructure long term.

Potholes may seem minor, but they reflect larger problems with the city’s aging roads, bridges, and infrastructure system. Being a Chicago native, I know how damaging potholes have been to my vehicles over the years. For many people, this is more than an inconvenience; potholes are a symbol of neglect and a call for better care and investments overall.
